That Time of Year

Weeks went by as Sam got back into the routine of school. She and Zach grew closer every day, and Daniel had left her alone for the most part, aside from staring across the cafeteria during lunch and the occasional conversation attempt.

The large group of friends hung out often, usually downtown after school on Fridays. On birthdays, they all went to Felicia's house for campfire sing-alongs and spoopy stories. Sam joined their lunch time club called "Spectrum" which was a club all about equal rights and supporting everyone on the spectrum, which was a lot of fun. She got to know everyone very quickly and had a lot of friends. Her parents were surprised at how social she was being, compared to the way she acted in her old schools.

She and Zach became closer still, best friends. The weeks turned into months and it was soon time for the biggest event of junior year: prom! Everyone was being asked or asking each other to go. Andrew and Dakota were dating since last year, so of course they were going together. Brett and Talia were a new couple, brought together by his prom-posal.

Leia, Jackie, Ramona, and Kyra all had dates. Sam felt a little left out considering prom was only a few weeks away. She and Zach hadn't even talked about prom and even though they weren't dating, she secretly wanted to go with him.

She made her way through the crowded hallways towards her locker deep in thought. As she went to open it, she noticed that there were more people in the hallways than usual. Without thinking too much about it, she opened her locker. A note was hanging from the top, visible as soon as she opened the door. Sam took it down and read it. Turn around was all it said.

She turned around slowly, and was surprised by what she saw. Zach was standing there, a huge sign in his hands that read 'PROM?' and a smile on his face. "Will you go to prom with me?" He asked. She rushed across the hall, almost knocking him over with a giant hug.

As the two were laughing, the crowd behind them parted for a very angry Daniel. "Yo, what are you doing?" He yelled. Sam and Zach turned to look him, Zach's hand around Sam's waist holding her close. "What are you talking about Daniel? I asked her to prom. That's been happening almost every day around here." Zach said.

This only made Daniel more frustrated. "Dude, you know I'm into Sam. She's basically mine and you go and just ask her to prom without thinking about anyone but yourself." Zach laughed at this. "That is hilarious." He replied. "You know Sam doesn't like you, so back off. And besides, if you had wanted to ask her to prom you would've asked her before now." He removed his hand and stepped towards Daniel. "And you're wrong. I wasn't thinking about myself when I asked her." His voice was a whisper, but Sam heard what he said. "All I was thinking about was her."

Daniel glared at Sam, who was too stunned to even react. Zach was thinking about her, only her. Daniel couldn't find anything to say, so he stormed off down the hallway. The crowd started to separate, leaving Zach and Sam alone in the hallway. Zach walked over, facing Sam. "Sam, I'm so sorry about that. I didn't think he'd react the way he did. I should've realized. I'm so sorry." Sam smiled, putting her arms around his neck and leaning her forehead against his. "Don't apologize. There's nothing you could've done. Don't worry about it." Zach smiled too. "And to answer your question, yes. Zach Simmons yes I will go to prom with you."
