The next morning i sit in the doctor's office awaiting my physical. Let me just tell you the spot on my shoulder has really been hurting. It was bleeding last night, and it was hard to stop it. The door opens and a bulky man with large glasses walks in.
"You must be.." he looks down at his clipboard, "Natalie. I'm Doctor Shawn, your old Doctor, Miss Kontrair? She retired." I loved that doctor, she was calm, and gentile. She wore bright red lipstick everywhere she went, and her pink powdery cheeks never failed to attract older men. Whenever i went out of the room, or even if i saw her at the store. She would always pat my shoulder. He leads me to a room, and has me sit down on those bed type things. "Has your throat been hurting at all?" He reaches up, and lightly squeezes my throat. "All good, not let's look inside." He grabs a metal stick and turns it on. A light shines bright. "Open wide!" i open, he looks to the sides of my mouth. "Looks good." He switches to my ears. It always tickles, all of a sudden my shoulder itches like crazy. I go up to itch it, and scratch it so hard, Doctor Shawn has to pry my hand away. When i look at my fingers, they're blood red.
No Joke.
"Geez, do you have a really bad rash or something?" He takes a cotton ball out of a glass jar, and presses it on my shoulder. When he's soaked up all of the blood, he examines it. "How long have you had this?" I think back to a almost a year ago, i was in the shower when my shoulder suddenly itched. Thinking it was a bug I looked over at it. A freckle was there. Over the past few weeks it has grown bigger, like a mole size now.
"A few weeks." I lie.
"Okay well do this for me. Go to the hospital and tell them Doctor Shawn sent you and them this note..." he scribbles on a piece of paper.
"Can i still play?"
"Ask the nurses that at the hospital." he helps me down off of the bed, and i meet my dad out in the hallway. Doctor Shawn, and him talk for a second.
All of a sudden dad yells, "Come on sweetie, let's go!"Dad runs out of the building and unlocks our car. "Get in, he yells." i hop in the car, we head off at full speed, down one road after the next.
"Where are we going?" I ask.
"To a hospital."
"But we just passed one." i'm confused. If we need a hospital, then why aren't we going to the one in town.
"We need a better more efficient one." we speed off down the road, I stare out the window. What is it with my shoulder? What's so bad about it? We pass the rusty old sign that marks the beginning of our town. We hardly ever go out of town, when we do, it's to go see family, and I don't think I've seen any one outside of town in years. Dad passes cars and speeds. I'm surprised we aren't caught by the cops. He turns sharp corners and loops the loops way too fast. I might actually enjoy this ride, if my stomach weren't so terrified. Finally after what sees like forever a big building stands tall in the distance. He doesn't slow down or use a turn signal to pull into the parking lot. We park as close as we can get, and he hops out. Without me for a second, but i jump right out with him. I have never seen my jog before, and he doesn't. He runs. I won't lie, he's fast. But i'm faster. To take my mind off of what's happening i run, making it my job to beat him, and outrun him. I make it there first, that's pretty good comparing i'm a 'girl' and he got a head start.
I push open the doors and congratulate myself for winning, but my dad doesn't stop. Instead he runs up to the desk and asks for an immediate doctor. Which we get, unwillingly, he asks if i could get screened for cancer.
"Sure, but you might have to wait a while." he points to all of the people waiting in line, and on the chairs, and even on the floor. My dad sighs. We go to the back of the line, the very long line. The line takes an hour before we are even signed in, and she says it might be up to a 3 hour wait!
"Dad?" no answer."dad? Dad? Dad. Dad. Dad." i say it faster. "Dad dad dad dad dad dad. DAD!" i yell.
"What sweetie?" he looks at me.
"Why are we here, why are we in a rush?" he hesitates.
"You, you have signs of Ca-"
