Darker Than Most

The bruise on my jaw was abnormally purple looking, and it throbbed every time I turned my head. It was suprising that such a small girl could blow a nasty punch.

I felt strangely dark on Monday, partly because I had to go to school with a lump on my face. I decided to express my mood with a darker look than usual.

I grabbed my eyeliner and gracefully slid it around my eye a few times to make it dark and menacing. I contemplated whether to put on black lipstick, for I already used it every day of the year. Without thinking I snatched my red lipstick and applied it with ease.

As I reached my closet I looked around for the most daring outfit, so that maybe it would attract my parent's attention. So far they hadn't even noticed that I was undergoing depression, so I tried everything I could to grasp there full focus. Though they've always been to busy with work to even care that I wasn't dead or in jail.

I ended up putting on my black leather jacket and jeans, with the addition of combat boots and a black choker.

The look on Gray's face made my heart drop so suddenly that is scared me. He looked almost disappointed as I met him by my locker. Gray brought his hand unconsciously to my bruised jaw, and stroked his thumb against it. Pure sorrow was in his eyes.

"You're going to be okay," His gray eyes were soft and his lips came up into a pity smile.

"I know," I nodded back. "It'll be gone in a few days."

"No," Gray whispered, his minty breath blowing slightly in my face. "I don't mean the bruise. I mean your heart."

With that, he was gone, leaving me flustered as usual.

Today was my first day to get to my favorite class, art. Today was my first day because a nice someone decided to rough me up. Hehe I mean you, Gabby.

Art was the only class that I could express who I really was; and instead of being scolded or ignored, I was praised and admired.

Granted, I wasn't a spectacular artist, but I did dabble in pain a bit and my emotions spread easily on the canvas.

"Piper!" Ms. Holly, the art teacher, squealed. "I'm so happy you joined art again this year!"

I beamed at Ms. Holly. Her bright red hair, dazzling green eyes, and positive personality made it impossible not to like her. I was her complete opposite.

When I sat down at the table, I gazed around the room at my classmates. As usual, Theo, Rebecca, Liza, and Chuck were sitting together, waiting for my arrival. But there was a stranger sitting at the opposite end. He had earbuds in and was hunched over a sketchpad. A grey beanie hung over his choppy black hair, and he bit his lip as he frantically sketched on the paper.

"Who's that?" I asked Chuck as soon as the stranger looked at me in the eyes, and I paled. It was him. His piercing blue eyes stared into mine, and his eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"That's Nolan Charms," Chuck replied.

"I know," I whispered, not taking my eyes off of him.
