The next morning, as my father had said, I was awoken early to get dressed. Holi and I spoke no words as she slipped me into a deep blue dress with blue flowers on the waistband and propped my favorite tiara on my head. She did my hair in a simple braid. By the time she was done, I looked like I was going to a ball.
"Thank you Holi. I- I'm going to miss you the most." My managed to get out between sobs.
"You were by far the most enjoyable person I've ever served." Holi's eyes began to water so we said our goodbyes before we could cry.
Outside the palace, I said an unemotional goodbye to my father and got into my small carriage with my little suitcase. We were to stop at other castles along the way for food and supplies, so we didn't need to bring many things with us. 'Us' was the driver in the front, the navigator next to him and two guards in the back. I was to sit inside the carriage alone, but the guards would come inside with me come dark.
It had become night quickly once we left, even though I swore it was early morning when we had departed. The guards remained outside until we reached the woods and then joined me on the opposite seat to me. I soon learned that their names were Mitch and Lucia, one with dead black hair and dark skin and the other with bright red hair and freckled, pale skin. They looked like night and day together.
We didn't talk much other than short introductions. Until the horses became startled and we came to a halt. At that point I was starting to dose off so the sudden stop shook me awake. Mitch and Lucia hurried out of the carriage to see what was the matter. I couldn't help thinking how it was only the first night of our ten day journey and we had already come across some issues. I peered out one of the tiny windows in the door to see Mitch looking confused into the dark, shadowed woods. Nothing moved. Everything was still. Crickets had stoped chirping and nightingales stoped singing. Something was wrong.
Finally, something in the darkness of the foul forest moved and stalked towards the carriage. The horses were spooked and tried to free themselves from the reigns. I knew that whatever that thing was, it was not coming to help us.
I started feeling drowsy. A too-sweet smell scented the air and I fell onto the carriage floor and closed my eyes. The last thing I remembered was Lucia's scream and a silhouetted face above mine.
