The medics arrived and did some emergency first aid and later placed her on the stretcher and wheeled her to the awaiting ambulance. Vicky and Dave followed behind and climbed in the back of the ambulance with their dying sister.
When they reached the hospital, they found doctors and nurses ready to wheel Don to the emergency room.
Dave sat at one of the benches just thinking about what happened in the last hour, and it was as if his mind was in a haze and he couldn't think right. He didn't know what to feel: guilt, regret, or anger. Vicky was also rooted in thought, even not knowing what to think or react to the situation at hand.Just then, their parents, Came into the hospital scared out of their minds, they did not know if they were frightened that Don was hurt or the fact that all this would be blamed on Dave.
"Vicky, did you do this? "Dave asked his sister.
"Do what?" Vicky asked
"Mess with the harness" Dave replied looking anywhere else other than his sister.
"No, of course not why would I risk my happiness, freedom, and reputation for her. I am not stupid, Okay? "Vicky replied angrily that her brother would think she did something as crazy as that."Do you think she did this to gain attention?" Lilian, their mother, asked."I mean you can never expect anything good from her" She continued putting as much disgust as she could on 'her.'
"Dave tells me everything that happened while you were up there, "John, their dad asked.
"Nothing happened we were just climbing, and suddenly her harness broke, and she fell," Dave Stated the half-truth.
He did not mention the fact that hitting Don was most likely the most probable cause that made her fall and he and Vicky knew it, but through silent stares, they knew they Couldn't let that information get out. They hoped the people back at school knew what to do.Back at school, after talking to the students and getting nothing but confirmation that it was indeed an accident and nobody daring to say anything about Don's bullying or Dave's bullying his Sister while on the Climbing wall, the police just let it go and blamed the management for lousy maintenance.
Back at the hospital, the doctors informed Don's family that she was in a critical condition and had a 50/50 chance of survival. Although they almost regretted all they had done to Don and were worried about her, their pride would not let them show this, and their faces remained with an emotionless mask. Well, that was before they knew about the exact details of her injuries. She had a fractured skull, a broken neck, hand and leg, and a damaged spinal cord which made the doctors doubt that she would ever talk or ever do anything again in her life. The doctors had given her a 10% chance of ever recovering and 20% at ever waking up still. Of course, they did not say this to her family fearing that they would have much-unwanted attention, Don's family figured it out the way the doctors and nurse kept on looking at them with pity.
