Chapter 3
That next day, Sapphire decided to turn in her filled out résumé. Maybe even bump into the mystery man from before…well, maybe not really ‘bump’ into him like before.
“You are SO dead when I get a hold of you! You made me walk home alone, not to mention in the DARK!” Sapphire yelled into her cell, walking down the busy street of L.A. “And don’t you dare come up with any excuses!” Sapphire silenced to give Kaytie a chance to talk. Her face grew darker. “You what?! Okay, so let me get this straight…you couldn’t find him at the restaurant so you just stayed at a motel across the road while I almost got mugged!?” Kaytie squealed on the other end. “Y-yah…but Luka showed up so-”
More squeals.
“Ugh, not now Kaytie…I’ll tell you later. Just not now, I’m already pissed as is…” Sapphire rolled her eyes. “I’ll give you a chance to apologize in ten years.” At that, Sapphire hung up, just avoiding more high-pitched squeals. ‘Hm, maybe I shouldn’t have been so hard on her…but she did leave me in the dust…I’ll apologize after she does…properly.’ She thought to herself, her foot crossing into the restaurant. She notices something flash in her eye while someone crossed in front of her. But it was too late to avoid running into a tall figure.
‘BAM!’
At the moment of contact, plates shattered to the floor…along with the intricate, expensive-looking food that was now all over the ground…and the man before her. She noticed the waiter attire he was currently wearing, admiring the mess of food on the floor…and on him as well. She could feel many pairs of eyes on the mess that had just occurred. Her eyes fell to the floor in embarrassment while she apologized profusely. Sapphire was fiddling with her hands, her face fully flushed due to the whole mess she had caused. “I am so sorry! I-I just wasn’t paying any attention! I am just so so sorry…I-I’ll go now, I’m sorr-”
She felt a warm grip on her arm while she turned to leave, chills running up her arm, scared as to what his intentions might be. ‘Oh my god oh my god oh my god! Is he going to punch me for getting food all over him?! What should I do? Should I just take responsibility for my actions, or bolt out the door, full speed ahead? …Pft, screw it, I don’t need this job, there’s plenty out there…I’ll stick with the latter!’ As soon as she snapped back to reality, she wrenched her arm free from the man’s grasp and bolted for the door.
Sapphire was breathing in ragged breaths as she leaned against the side of a building, just around the corner of the restaurant she had just sprinted out of. She was now in an alley, panting heavily. She blinked repeatedly, finally making sense of the situation. ‘Did I seriously just run out of a freaking five star restaurant? After I broke what probably was a five hundred dollar set of plates?! And that guy…ooohhh! Now I feel horrible! I should probably go back and at least apologize to him! I mean, he didn’t do anything wrong…yah, I think I’m going to apologize. Then again, I don’t want to go back there! What if the manager arrests me?! Would he? Can you go to jail from breaking plates in a restaurant, and then fleeing to the door? Probably…’ Sapphire had morphed her face into one with wonder, her nose crinkled and her lips pursed.
“…What you doing there?” A familiar voice rang through her ears, bringing her face to surprise.
Sapphire shot her head in the direction of the figure, almost receiving whiplash. “U-uh…wh-what are you…?” She managed to stutter practically every word, her eyes glued to his face. ‘What is HE doing here?! …Oh god…don’t tell me-’
He ran his hand through his brown hair, eyeing her coolly with those familiar sparkling jade eyes. “Well, I ran after you when you bolted through the door…” He sighed, wiping his work outfit with a rag, trying to wipe away the rest of the food from his shirt.
Sapphire’s eyes widened in realization. “That was you?!” She blurted, her voice coming out cracked and squeaky, almost like Kaytie’s…almost. “Oh my god…I am so sorry! I did tell you that right?”
He chuckled lightly in amusement. “Yes, you told me…more times than I can remember actually…” He cocked his head to the side and crossed his arms, standing before her as his eyes stayed locked on her, grinning. “…Sapphire.”
‘He is getting way too amused about this situation-’ she looked up at him, complete and utter surprise and confusion spread across her face. ‘…How did he know my name?’ She thought to herself when he handed her a small wallet that was all too familiar. “My wallet? How did you-” She trailed off, looking at him accusingly.
“Before you get any ideas, you dropped it in your poor attempt of fleeing.” He bit the side of his cheek, trying to prevent himself from grinning any wider.
She grabbed her wallet and stuffed it in her pocket. “T-thanks…” She returned to fiddling with her hands once again in embarrassment. “But I never did get your name…” She glanced up at him, watching as his face seemed to fall slightly pale. ‘Is he scared to give me his name?’
“Oh…m-my name…” He chewed his cheek harder at this point.
‘I’ve never heard him stutter before…it’s cute.’ She thought to herself, involuntarily giggling.
“W-what? What’s so funny?” His voice cracked, causing her to giggle once more.”What?” His face grew red as he brought his hand to his face to cover the embarrassment.
She couldn’t prevent herself from smiling wide. “You stuttered…it’s funny, you’re always so confident, and just now you got so worked up when I asked you for your name.” She replied.
He flushed at her response. “Y-yah, well…I don’t know you well, so…I j-just don’t feel…” He scratched the back of his neck sheepishly, avoiding eye contact. He sighed after a sort pause. “It’s, um…G-Greg…”
Sapphire’s eyes widened. ‘Greg? Seriously?! That’s his name? I didn’t expect that…I thought it would be more like…Daniel, or Shane…not Greg. How unexpected.’
She brought her hands to her face and let out a light laugh.
“W-What’s so funny?! Is my name too weird? There are plenty of people with the name.” He crossed him arms and began to pout. “Hey, knock it off!”
She couldn’t stop from laughing, which made him agitated. Sapphire’s eyes were forced shut as she stooped over, trying to catch her breath. She opened her eyes, still bent over. She had noticed a pair of feet awfully close to hers and flung her head up, causing long hair to fly around in brunette strands. After she whisked her hair from her face, she noticed how close Greg had gotten. “U-um…sorry..I-.”
“Hmm, what if I told you that my name isn’t what you think?” His eyes were narrowed and serious. He had to bend over slightly just to come face-to-face with Sapphire.
“U-Um. I-I don’t know…I mean, it is your name so…” She began to stutter and turn red from the close proximity.
At that he backed away and stood tall once more, grinning down to her. “Are you positive?” He chuckled and walked past her at a brisk pace. He spoke softly, almost to himself, “I’m not so sure myself…”
