"What are you thinking?" Millie asked me as I tried to figure out which direction to go to get to the cars. "I hope you'll miss me and I wish you'd kiss me."
"I'm sorry, I can't." She said. Pointing in the right direction. She seemed too willing to let me go. "We're both monsters." I whispered, turning away from the girl I'd loved since day one. When I was younger there was a girl in my street. Her name was Remi. I remember her singing every night, all summer long. She sang just loud enough for me to hear from my bedroom. We'd both spend nights just sitting in our windowsills as I listened to her. I never thought she even knew. I visited her when I was fourteen. It was summer and I smiled when I heard her begin to sing. The usual song. I was on my back on the grass under the window, safe in the knowledge that she always looked up.
"Let's go in the garden
You'll find something waiting
Right there where you left it
Lying upside down
When you finally find it
You'll see how it's faded
The underside it lighter when you turn it aroundEverything stays right where you left it
Everything stays but it still changes
Ever so slightly
Daily and nightly
In little ways
When everything stays."She stopped for a second before singing a second verse that I'd never heard before.
"Well I guess you're back now
Right outside my window
Lying on the grass
Hearing me sing
You know when I get out
I can finally reach you
Because you are back now
There is no more painEverything's changed since they were killed
Everything's changed but it still stayed
Because ever so slightly
Daily and nightly
In little ways
Everything stays."I left after that, knowing I'd be recognized if I didn't. She died two weeks later. I felt so alone when I learned that that I was willing to give my own life to save even the King's. That's how I felt when I managed to start the car and drove off, away from my friends, and all for someone who had killed an innocent woman.
Love is weird, isn't it?
I didn't pull over until hours later, when I saw a McDonalds. I parked the car and was about to go in before realizing that I didn't have any money. I tightened the grip on my knife and walked in. The only person in there was an employee. "Are you here for the job offer?" He asked me, giving me a hopeful look. I made my decision in a split second. "Yes." I replied, swallowing thickly. "Yes I am, how did you know I wasn't Swedish?" I asked. "Your number plate is American."
"Weird, we got the cars here." I mumbled. "We? Multiple cars?" The guy behind the counter asked. "Long story." I replied. "Well, kid, I'm the manager and also the only current employee so you'll have to open up some day." He walked around the counter and shook my hand. "I'm Evan, and you are?"
"I'm Derrick, Derrick Henley." Said, shaking his hand with a smile. "You need a job, Der?"
"Yes sir." I said, saluting. Evan laughed. "I'm gonna need to see some ID." I pulled out the ID I'd used for the plane. Derrick Henley was also the name we'd used for that. "Seems in order." Evan thought for a few seconds before staring back at the chair behind the counter. "You know what, you got the job. I get too much money from the bosses anyways." I smiled and shook his hands. "So, Der, where do you live?"
"I'm kind of between places right now. I just sleep in the car."
"That's okay, I sleep in the break room of this place." I snorted at Evan's comment."You handle it." I mumbled when I heard the door open a few weeks later. Evan sighed. "You better be happy you're my only friend, Der." He got up to serve the customer. "Uhm, Der?" I heard him say, panic in his voice. I still carried a gun and I quickly pulled it out. "What is it, Evan?" I asked, slowly walking to the front. "There's some people here to see you." He said. I ran out, knowing what everyone that was looking for me was capable of. "Finn!" I heard Gaten yell, dropping his gun. "Guys." He snapped at the others. They all lowered their weapons, Noah last. I noticed Millie wasn't there. "Uhm, Derrick?" Evan piped up next to me. I ignored him for now. "Are you guys here to kill me?" I asked my "friends". "Maybe for leaving us but Millie admitted to everything." Noah said, scowling at the ground. "Now why don't you get us some food, I'm starving." Caleb said, sitting down. Evan nodded and got out of there as quickly as possible. "How did you find me?" I asked them. "Car spotter not too far from here, saw your car on the parking lot." Sadie replied, laying down. "Watch your head." Noah instructed her. "What happened?"
"Millie didn't go down without a fight." Sadie said, taking a sip from her water bottle. "Is she..." I wanted to cry even just thinking about it. "No, she's alive." Caleb said, accepting a bag of fries from a shaking Evan. "She's in the car, we're going home." Gaten said, leaning his head in his hands. "What do you mean?" I asked. "The police ruled the Upside Down too broken to house homeless people." Noah explained, stuffing his mouth with fries. "We're going back. We'll figure out what to do with Millie after."
"Well how are we gonna get there?"
"I know a guy that got us a private pilot." Caleb said. "Not gonna question that." Evan handed me the last portion of fries. "Evan, sit down." I said, he shook his head. "No thank you, sir."
"Whoa, Evan, calm down. Just sit with us, all will be okay if you don't tell anyone about this."
"That sounds like a threat." He said. "It wasn't supposed to." I assured him. "They're all nice people." He didn't seem convinced.Driving to a remote farm with Millie in a different car felt kinda weird, especially because I knew she was probably tied up. I was in the back, Sadie having claimed shotgun and Caleb driving. "Are we sure it's safe?" I asked, slightly startling them. "Finn, we never are." Sadie grimly replied. She had a point.
The next two days I didn't see Millie at all. Which was impressive from the others as the private plane wasn't exactly big. After landing at a farm near our house, Caleb managed to steal a van. "Oh you magnificent beauty." He whispered, starting the car. "Should we give you two some alone time?" Gaten sarcastically said. Caleb rolled his eyes and we drove the last few miles in silence. I was sitting across from Millie but there was a bag over her head. She looked like she'd taken a beating or two and she honestly reminded me of Caleb when we'd first found him. Noah roughly led Millie inside as I breathed in the familiar air and just stared at the house for a bit.
We were home.
