"Okay, I know some people who can get us to Sweden, I have plane tickets and know a guy that can get us face prosthetics and fake IDs." Sadie said. "Why is everyone here connected but me?" I asked, gaining some laughter from them. "You're just not a very social person, Finn." Millie said, looking up at me. I put my arm around her and Sadie rolled her eyes. I don't think Millie even knows about Sadie's crush on her. "So, where to?" Caleb asked, looking at Sadie in the rear view mirror. "Follow this highway, second right." She instructed and he nodded. She yawned but tried to cover it up. Didn't work. Noah subtly pulled her closer and she rested her head on his shoulder.Watching those two made me miss my own family. Yes, my parents were dead but my brother wasn't. He was safe, though. He'd fled to Europe with Jaeden, Wyatt, Jeremy, Chosen, and Sophia. I missed my cousins more than anyone knew. They were basically my siblings until I went to jail. When I got out with the help of Sadie and Noah, they were in France. I was 10 at the time and felt completely alone. But I wasn't. Noah and Sadie took me with them, I did help Sadie get out of that prison, after all. We almost died in the process but that didn't matter. About two years later we found The Upside Down, the guy with access to its electricity and water agreed to take us in as long as we occasionally shoplifted some stuff for him. Not long after that we found Gaten alone in the woods, starving, exhausted, and dehydrated. Noah gave up his room and shared one with me so Gaten could have his own. We found Caleb tied up in the back of a supermarket not too long after that. His dad had locked him up in there and we helped him escape. Noah killed his dad. Caleb and Gaten just kinda clicked and they shared a room. And now we were leaving it all behind us.
I must've fallen asleep because I only realized we were where we were headed when Millie shook me awake. "Morning, sunshine." Sadie grinned from across the van. "Morning, Satan." She put the knife she was twisting between her fingers back in her bra. Sadie had a habit of concealing weapons in, and I quote, "places that guys can only dream of" because that was apparently the best place. "Let's go." Sadie opened the door and jumped onto the ground. I dragged Millie out with me and looked at the shady tattoo parlor we were in front of. "You sure we can trust them?" Caleb asked, looking Sadie in the eyes. Noah and her both nodded and she walked inside like she owned the place. "Frank! Lisa!" She yelled and two people wheeled in on desk chairs. "Hey hot stuff." The girl, I'm guessing Lisa, said, pulling a hand through her short, dark red hair. Sadie grabbed her by the shirt and basically started making out with her. I raised my eyebrows and turned to Caleb and Gaten who seemed equally shocked. "This again." Frank said, pulling Noah into a hug. "How are you, man?" He asked, letting go of the short boy. "Good, been busy tryna keep her in line." He replied in the most casual voice I'd ever heard him use. "Girls, breathe!" Frank yelled. "Just happy to see her, that's all." Lisa said as Sadie just smiled at her sheepishly. "Well do you see me making out with Schnapp?"
"Honestly it wouldn't be the first time." Lisa replied and the four of us were getting more confused by the second. "I was drunk, that doesn't count." Noah laughed, slapping her arm. "Tell that to Finn, you may have just broken his heart." We all burst into laughter."So, you gonna introduce us- stop making out and pay attention to us." I said, rolling my eyes at the two girls. "Now you know how we feel, Finny." Millie snorted slightly at Sadie's comment which sounded adorable. "Let's sit." Frank said, pulling us all to three couches in the corner. "Right," Noah started, "Gaten," Gaten raised a hand, "Caleb," he quickly gave them a "what's up", "Finn," I smiled awkwardly, "and the newest addition, Millie." He finished and Lisa shot Sadie a look. "Well I'm Frank, or Sol to friends. This is Lisa, or Luna." Oh so that's Luna I thought. "You need new faces and IDs?" Lisa asked. I nodded. "Well I see why you need a new face, honey." She said with a straight face before bursting into laughter. Hearing Noah laugh and seeing him so relaxed was still really weird. "I'm just messing with ya, come on to the back while Frankie works on your IDs." I followed her and she set me down in a chair. "I'm gonna transform your face while you fill me in on everything that's happened in the years that you've known those losers." She ordered, grabbing a toolbox from the counter. She instructed me to close my eyes and start talking. "Okay, uhm, where should I start?"
"Tell me your own story first, who are you, where you from, what were you in for, shit like that."
"Uhm okay, well I'm Finn Wolfhard, though that's not my real name. I'm from DC, actually, well I grew up in a connected town. Lived near a playground with my parents and brother. No one of us had to work and we even had a maid, I was such a dick to her from ages eight through ten, I regret that. There was this cute restaurant down the road, I used to go there with my friends, they served the best ice cream ever and their rocky roads were to die for." I smiled at memories of summer afternoons and winter days, when the only thing keeping us warm was a mug of their hot chocolate. "I didn't exactly have a lot of friends, I was really close with my cousins, though. The friends that I did have that weren't related to me were the best people ever. I miss them a lot and I don't even know if they're still alive." I inhaled shakily. "Don't cry, it loosens the latex."
"I remember one summer, we were dying from the heat and forgot to bring money so we were just in that restaurant, dying. The owner had recognized us and walked up to us with our favorite flavours, told us we were the only reason she was still in business." I smiled, remembering the woman, she slowly became like a mother to all of us. "My parents are dead now, the King had them killed. They knew too much and helped Noah and Sadie escape, but not before they'd given me some names of people that had helped in the kidnapping and training of the kids. We've been killing them one by one for years now. I'll never forget two of them, husband and wife, british. Their three children stood in the corner with their faces to the wall as Noah pulled the trigger on both of them. One of them was our age, one was older, and one was younger." I took a deep breath in. "The middle one was called Millie. I'm the reason her parents are dead."
"So things haven't changed." She replied. "You can't tell Millie."
"I know, kid."
"By the way, how do you know Sadie and Noah?"
"I'm Lisa McNamara, I know you've seen my name before. You are the King's cousin of course."
"You already knew everything I just told you, didn't you?"
"Yah."
"Listen, I'm sorry for not telling the press about the training."
"It's okay, kid. I forgive you. Life sucks and we've accepted that."
