I am awakened by a soft rustling nearby my bed. I open my eyes slightly, light blinds me for a second, and see a nurse scribbling something down on a stack of paper on a clipboard.

She would be a pretty nurse, but I had no interest in her. Long, straight blond hair that reached her shoulders, and bright blue eyes and a nose that I envied. She stood up straight and her nails were purple and green.

"Hi," I say, barely even managing a whisper.

She looks over at me, and is about to say something, but the phone on the wall starts to ring. She hurries over to it and holds it to her ear.

"Room 306 Nurse Valerie speaking." I heard her say.

"Uh huh." "Okay I will tell him." She said. Then she hung up and turned around to face me and strides toward me.

(Right as I put "strides toward me" the damn ice cream truck interrupted me)

"There is someone here to see you," she tells me.

How is that even possible? My parents were dead, and I had no boyfriend...I did have a crush one guy though...but the way he was and acted made me think he was straight. I miss him so much.

-Le flashback of shortness-prepare thy body-

They danced in the forest clearing. The boy and the other, hand in hand.

"Tag! You're it!" one shouted to the other.

"Oh fine, I guess...," and with that they ran in circles, zigzags, running underneath low hanging branches, and this and that.

The boy in the checkered shirt finally caught up with the one in the navy blue shirt. They both fell over on top of each other. The one that was fallen on was Jerome. The one that fell on him was Mitch.

Jerome gazed up at Mitch with his odd eyes. Mitch stared in Jerome's eyes. Jerome wasn't sure what to think. He mostly thought this beautiful boy was the work of God.

Jerome thought they were going to kiss.

He was wrong.

Mitch's father pulled Mitch off of Jerome and threw him to the ground, then he took off his belt. He hit Mitch in the face, in the gut, and Mitch screamed in agony. Mitch's father continued to kick Mitch around until Mitch was coughing up blood.

Jerome slowly backed away from the boy he loved.

If he couldn't have him, he would just have to live alone.

-end of the fuckin thing-

Sometimes I wonder what it is like to dance with death. Then I remember I have a few times. The car wreck, and me mostly almost cutting too deep into my arms with the knife. I cringed at the thought of that much pain. Never again.

There is a knock at the door, and Nurse Valerie rushes to open it. Before I saw the person, however, I closed my eyes for a brief moment, and I heard light footsteps. They stopped at my bed. I inhaled deeply. Maple syrup?

I opened my eyes, and all I could do was stare in amazement.

Mitch.
