Heat sensors that recognize the

Warmth of another human being and

Hungrily move aside to let them in.

Her heart has these automatic doors

That she cannot control.

People come in as they please

And she can't protect herself.

But even worse,

She has no way to make them stay

When they decide to walk away.

Her heart has these automatic doors

That let people in and let people out.

These automatic doors that

Operate on the deceitful,

Cold-loving warmth of other

Empty buildings like her.

Despondency swallowed me. I had not seen him all day. He wasn't there at breakfast, lunch, or dinner, And I worked all three shifts.

He wasn't there when I walked back to the dorm in the evening.

He wasn't there when I walked to the gym at night. The light in his room never came on at all.

His car wasn't in the parking lot.

I had no idea where he was and it was freaking me out.

I know I had no hold on him or his life and no right to demand his whereabouts but still...

There was a pit in my stomach and it kept growing the more I realized he wasn't there and that I would hit my bed tonight without having seen him at all.

It's crazy how you come to depend on people so much that your world threatens to fall apart when they disappear.

I had no idea what to do with myself.

It hit me like a thunderstorm. When had my life been reduced to the prospect of a future in his arms?
