That One YDAD – The First Date

It’s early. Grace squints her eyes and looks at her phone. 07:44. She lets out a groan and looks to her left. Panic. Hannah is not there. She was there last night, right under Grace’s arm?! Grace gets up from the couch. She checks the kitchen, nothing. Bathroom, empty. The front door is still locked and Hannah’s keys are hanging on the hook, so she hasn’t left. ‘The bedroom, come on Grace!’. She opens the door slightly and to her relief, Hannah is lying sound asleep. Grace takes a deep breath in, and out again and lets out a snigger. ‘You little shit, Hannah Hart.’ Grace makes her way to the kitchen and prepares Hannah some breakfast. A cup of tea and a bowl of porridge. ‘That should be alright I guess?’ Grace thought to herself, never having made Hannah breakfast before. Grace put all the things onto a tray and carried it through to the bedroom.

“Hannah? Hannah, wake up it’s me. I brought you some breakfast.”

Hannah stirred then turned to face the tall blonde. Standing, smiling, with the tray in her hands.

“Oh, good morning Grace. What’s this?”

“I made you some breakfast. Thought you would need it. You wanna talk about what happened yesterday?” Grace asked, placing the tray in front of Hannah, who was now sitting up in the bed.

“Wow, this is so nice of you. And yes, lets talk. I feel like I wanna get this off my chest.”

Grace sat cross-legged in front of Hannah on the bed. “So, come on then. What happened?”

Hannah described to Grace the eruptive argument that her and Annie had had the night before last. They screamed, they swore, they swung for each other. Hannah was annoyed because Annie had missed their date night. But Hannah had noticed that Annie was missing more of their planned evenings. Date nights, film nights, even nights out. Annie suddenly had all of this work to do but had nothing to show for it. Hannah found it all a bit suspicious that she kept disappearing for 5 out of 7 nights a week with ‘I have a lot of work to do.’ as an explanation.  However, Hannah finally decided to confront Annie and really start digging deep to fine out where she had been.

“We argued for hours, Grace. It was terrible. I was getting no answers or truth out of her whatsoever. I was convinced she was lying. Then it happened. The arguing stopped. I kept talking and she stopped. Silence. I stopped talking and then she finally said it. She had been cheating on me, for months. How fucking stupid can I be, Grace? She had been cheating on me for months and I didn’t even realize. I demanded to know who it was. She insisted it didn’t matter. That it was no one I knew but I didn’t care. I wanted to know. Transpires it was some guy from the office. A MAN. Do you know how fucking insulting that is? After that I didn’t even want to look at her. I shouted at her to get out of my house and she just stood there. Trying to apologize. No. I was having none of it. I loved her. Like really, really besotted with her. She ripped out my heart and threw it in the garbage disposal. Fucking bitch. I demanded she leave. Then she gathered her stuff and left. Before she went out the door I said ‘Oh by the way, we’re through’. What a line huh?”

“Wow, Hannah. That’s quite something”

“Yeh. When I phoned you I was so upset and mad. Then I smashed that glass on my hand. Like an upper class fool.”

“Don’t worry about the glass thing. Those wounds will heal in time. I cleaned up all the glass from the kitchen floor for you.”

“Thanks. So, yeh, that was that pretty much it. I just needed some company last night. Being the first night on my own for about a year…2 months and 6 days.”

“That’s rough dude. Mamrie is concerned about you too, Hannah.”

“Let her know what’s happened. I really can’t be doing with explaining all that again!”
