"In every generation, there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. She is, The Slayer."

Upon arrival in Shinelow, Eve Teresa Helsing thought it looked quite regular. The little town looked like most that she'd lived in do, with cute little identical houses, quaint shops and parks, two schools, and perfectly manicured lawns. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

She sat in the front seat of her mother's black pickup truck, and turned her curly brunette head to look at the only constant figure she'd known in her life. Although Joy Helsing was the main reason for all the instability, Eve adored her mother.

Joy was small and skinny, living on mostly cigarettes and black coffee, a habit from her punk days. She had short, blonde hair that was often covered by a scarf or hat, since it fell out in clumps on bouts of worry. She wore mostly faded band t shirts and skinny jeans, with black boots and dark eyeliner. Eve looked a lot like her mother in dress, but her face was all the father she never knew.

Eve was small as well, but had a lot more meat on her bones. Eve ate a lot, but was constantly getting into fights at school, so fight and flight were both second nature to her. She had a round, kind face, and big blue eyes with whisps of almost white like clouds. She had full, red lips and rosy cheeks, and curly chocolate brown hair with choppy bangs that fell in her face a lot. She loved to wear tank tops and skinny jeans, and Doc Martens were the only footwear she'd ever choose.

Eve grew up on the run. Her mother blamed it mostly on the fights Eve got into and how she could never get along with other kids, but Eve knew they were always running from something. From what, her mother never told. But they were always running.

Because of this, Eve kept mostly to herself. Making friends was a waste, and buying things was too since it only made packing up harder. Eve learned to fight and how to entertain herself quickly, and had used these skills all her life. She expected they'd be leaving Shinelow in a matter of weeks, until her mother said that day,

"I think I want to stay here."

Eve turned to her, wide eyed. "What did you say?"

"Got a hearing problem loser?" Joy laughed, "I said I want to stay. I like it here."

"We haven't even gotten to the house yet."

"You'll love the house."

"And you'll say you want to stay until something makes you nervous." Eve huffed.

Joy's gripped tightened on the steering wheel. "Eve, we've been over this and I don't think that's very fair."

"Oh sure, it's never fair to you and it's never your fault. We always have to leave but it's never anything to do with you."

Joy gritted her teeth, "Eve, stop. We just got here, it's a fresh start, I don't want to talk about this."

"Then I won't talk at all." Eve said, and that was the end. She stayed silent for the rest of the car ride, and fell asleep hungry.

Visions of blood and crosses burned into the back of her eyelids, Eve sat bolt upright on her mattress, sweating and shaking. The screaming still rang in her ears, and she rubbed her eyes, trying to get those horrible nightmares out of her memory.

She'd been having them for weeks now, just after she'd turned 16 they'd turned up. They made sleeping difficult, and she hoped that they'd go away before school started.

But that did not seem likely.

She rolled over on her mattress to face the open window, the August breeze gently carressing her face. From where she lay, she could see the road into town, and the sign that said, "Welcome to Shinelow" in cheery faded paint. Even in the dim moonlight, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

She watched a couple walk down the road, as her eyelids began to get heavy. The man pulled the woman very close to him, and Eve fell asleep thinking it was the weirdest kiss she'd ever seen.

Eve was dreaming again long before he dropped her lifeless body on the ground. By the next morning, she was gone.
