The shrill scream of the school bell struck Eve's ears, and her classmates buzzed with activity. Third period was her lunch, and her stomach growled at the thought.
She gathered her books and headed out the door, following the steady stream of classmates. Her math teacher attempted to speak to the class, but over the dull roar he was inaudible.
She filed out, beginning the walk to her locker, when a hand tapped her shoulder.
"Hello, are you Eve?"
Eve was being smiled at by a boy a little older than her. He was tall and lanky, with curly, brown, closely cropped hair, and big brown eyes with a swirl of lighter brown, like caramel in chocolate. He wore a hoodie, jeans and a beanie, and carried a bookbag that looked rather empty.
"Yeah, I'm Eve. Eve Helsing." Eve replied, smiling back.
"I'm your watcher." He said plainly.
"Generally, these things start with names, so lets try again." Eve said cheerily, "Hi, I'm Eve, I fight Eve-l! I also like bad jokes."
He chuckled a little, "I'm Charles Carmichael, but I prefer being referred to by my last name."
"Nah, I'm gonna call ya Charlie." Eve laughed back. "And I don't need any watching, thanks so much."
Eve turned away from the boy, but he put his hand on her shoulder.
"Eve. Do you know what a Watcher is? Do you know what you are?"
She stopped for a moment, then replied, "I'm just Eve."
He shook his head, "Let's walk."
They walked together to the library, and didn't talk again until they got there. Carmichael threw his bag down on a chair, and pulled out a dusty old volume from a shelf.
They sat down at one of the tables in the deserted room, they locked eyes, and he spoke.
"Eve Helsing, you are the slayer. Your job is to rid the earth of evil until you die. You will stand against Vampires, Demons, and forces of darkness. This is your destiny."
He pushed the old book over to her, and across the front in bold gold lettering, was "VAMPYR", and it smelled like mildew. Eve wrinkled her nose.
"There is no way in hell I am reading a giant super old book that smells like the creepy."
Carmichael clicked his tongue, "You have much to learn young Padawan, this is a hellmouth, hell is beneath."
"You are totally pooping my 'Just moved here fresh start ' party Carmichael." Eve stated plainly, sitting back in her chair.
"Fine." He said, throwing his hands in the air, "Better idea coming your way."
He opened up his bookbag and pulled out a sleek silver laptop, which he lovingly opened and placed on the table. His eyes darted to and fro around the screen, typing manically.
While he did that, Eve looked around the library. It was cold and fairly dark, and quite underpopulated. She was getting a serious case of the wiggins, and she could swear she was being watched from between the bookcases.
Carmichael looked up, and immediately got concerned. "Eve you are wicked jumpy, whats up? Spidey senses tingling?"
Eve laughed nervously, "So now slayers fight spiders too? It's nothing, lemme see whatcha got."
He turned his laptop screen around, and Eve began to browse.
"It's the Watcher's Council website," he explained, "There's everything Watchers need to know, and a forum for us as well, but theres lots of information for rookie watchers like myself that you could use."
She clicked around a bit, finding separate pages on Vampires, Demons, Werewolves, Succubi, even pixies and witches.
"It seems they've really stepped up their 21st century game on things that go bump in the night." Eve smiled.
"I agree, but all I want you to worry about right now, is Vampires." He said, digging around in his bag again.
"Right, the fang gang, nasty-pointey-bitey ones."
"Right you are kiddo, now take these." He said, handing her a small bottle of holy water, a stake, a pocket bible, and a tiny flip pad notebook,
"A Slayer's Handbook, by Buffy Summers." Eve read aloud. "This looks handwritten."
"It is, and it was passed on to me by a well respected Watcher, please take care of it." Carmichael asked earnestly.
Eve looked at her phone and stood up quickly, gathering all her things, "Well it's been great fun talking about the evil dead and all, but class is gonna start soon and tardiness is like the eighth deadly sin."
Carmichael stood up as well, "I'll walk you if you like."
"No thanks, I prefer to power walk with my earbuds in, sorta rude if someone's there."
"Well we'll have to meet up after school then, here preferably."
"Why?"
"Training, then patrol." Carmichael smiled.
"Alrighty then.." Eve laughed, walking out, "Sounds like a whole lotta pink ranger fun!"
"You best tell your mother!"
As Eve was walking out the door, she shot him the fake gun and a wink, "Will do Charlie!"
