Encounter

You had known, since you met your extended family, that life in Delmarva would have a few twists along the way. About six months ago your second cousin Andy had called you up with an offer of a farmhouse and a plot of land a while outside Beach City. He had gotten wind that you were looking to move out into the countryside, and he was as proud as can be to sell one of his inherited properties to a relative.

Upon moving in you told Andy you couldn't be happier to be part of the Demayo-[L/N] family. And then he introduced you to the Universes.

You never expected to meet Long-Lost Cousin Greg. You heard once that he ran away to be a rock star, and he was too distantly related for your parents to bother tracking him down. It was quite a surprise to finally meet him, along with his son Steven and Steven's three guardians.

Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. There was a time when you had been skeptical about the stories you used to hear--magical aliens who lived in Delmarva and defended Earth. (And as if it weren't enough of a surprise that they actually did exist, your newfound relative Steven was one of them.)

The family told you not to be a stranger, and with both relatives and nice townspeople in Beach City, you visited rather frequently in the half a year until now.

Today, however, you quickly regretted coming. You got your groceries, grabbed some salmon breadsticks from that weird pizzeria, and set off for home. It was somewhere out in the countryside that the giant metallic arm came into view, extending from the clouds. In shock, you only barely managed to keep the car on the road before finding a spot behind some bushes to pull off on. Continuing along the road would put you more in the open, and you thought it was best to lay low until...it passed.

What was it though? You carefully climbed out of the vehicle and crept through the bushes, hoping this thing was out of earshot. Daring to peek through the brush, you were somewhat relieved that this enormous yellow robot arm did not appear to be attached to a larger being...or was that worse? In any case, a segmented finger lowered to the ground and the tip opened up.

It must be some sort of spacecraft, you realized as a tall yellow figure stepped out. You quickly crawled back in your car and reached for the glove compartment, crossing your fingers that your bird-watching binoculars were still in there. Good. You pulled them out of the car and returned to peering through the bushes.

The figure looked to be a very business-like woman, despite her strangely spiky hair. When she turned slightly, you happened to see a small glint of some object on her chest--a gem? Was this another Gem like Steven and his guardians? You then noticed that in her hand she carried a smaller, pixie-like lady, possibly also a Gem, whom she set on the ground beside her.

The two surveyed the weedy field smugly, hands on hips as if they owned the place. It was then that you noticed a few large trees near them and your heart jumped in shock. The good news was that they were farther from you than you had thought. The frightening news was that the taller one was a giant. In fact, the little pixie Gem was probably around your height.

It occurred to you that it may be best to contact the Crystal Gems about this. You dug in your pocket for your phone and texted Steven.

"Bring the other CGs 2 that stretch of Mowden Road that goes thru field on way 2 my house. Dunno if these Gems r here peacefully."

You barely had time to watch your new visitors further before you felt your phone vibrate and you read the new text.

"New Gems??!! Wut do they look like?"

You typed a short description and sent it, a little too scared to hold the phone out far enough to take a good picture.

"1 is yellow, enormous, has a gem in a diamond shape I think? Other 1 is human size, also yellow."

You could almost hear the urgency in Steven's hastily-typed reply: "dontlet them see u we coming".
