Unveiled - Part One

# PROLOGUE

Her body was still against the cold concrete wall.

A scream that was not her own erupted from her left. The scream of a young woman that had suffered, it then turned to a yelp and then a strangled gurgle and then... Silence.

'No!' A yell came.

She realized from the pain in her throat that it had been her that had released those words unwillingly. The scorching pain only intensified now that she was aware of it.

Slowly, she gained the rest of her senses. The dampness of the blood that pooled where she slumped and the cold and hard concrete wall that supported her back. The dying stench of the caucuses that had been accommodating in the garbage tin's that night. The dimly lit alley way that she hid in, the darkness of the shadows absorbing the light that shone from the empty street. The emptiness of her surroundings, the faint ringing that followed and the stunning silence that had threatened her.

And that voice.

'You mustn't run anymore, Marlenia,' It slurred calmly, even though its breathing patterns had shown it must have been running... Chasing. 'You are neither safe nor protected if you returned now.'

It chuckled now, moving closer and closer. It reeked of death. The scent was oddly mixed with alcohol, sex and cheap cigarettes-- she could tell by the sickening haze it left after wafting around her like a cloud that wandered too close.

She felt herself spit at its feet, *in disgust probably*, she thought and words slipped from her bloodied mouth before she could stop them.

It laughed, a booming noise, and then closed in on her. She felt the weight of a heavy boot on her leg. A sneer had crossed its face, it seemed the only thing she saw from this largely built creature apart from the silhouetted glow of its faded and tousled hair. 'How dare you threaten me!'

Pain shot through her right leg where it stood, spreading after the faulty yet unmistakable *snap* of her bone. She would be crippled, her escape was muted. For now. Her nails dug into the concrete around her, leaving small concaves within the stone. Her back arched and her face contorted with pain, she realized that her leg had simply been a distraction as the creature had shoved a needle into her upper arm and had released a clear liquid. *Shit.*

Falling limp, the pain had quickly melted away but as did her vision. The world around her blurring before the darkness consumed her.

The memory that had never left haunted her: the last words he had spoken.

'Sleep, *Marlenia.*'

# CHAPTER ONE

There was not a single night where Matilda didn't have the same night terror.

'Tilda,' Worry had planted itself to the small and petite features of Penny's face as she whispered. 'Are you alright?'

It concerned Tilda that Penny had so much on her plate with her mothers recent death, her older brothers rebellion and graduation coming faster than she had ever anticipated, yet still she had the nerve to worry about her well being.
