There's Still Time

(We're nearing the end here! One more chapter then an epilogue... I've been planning the ending since the very beginning and I hope you guys like it! Don't worry, only a few more day's wait!)

"So I guess this is it?" John says as polite as he can, but Sam knows that he's disappointed as they approach the half dug grave. They watch as Sam digs up the rest and reveals their bones. John buries his head in Sherlock's shoulder and Sam looks down at the bones. Sherlock hands Sam the skull that's wrapped in fabric so he doesn't have to touch it.

Sam drops it in the grave and pours salt onto all the bones, including the skull.

"If you prefer, not to watch..." Sam says to the ghosts as he flicks open the lighter.

John buries his head deeper into Sherlock's shoulder, but Sherlock flicks the lighter back closed with his hand that's not holding John's.

"This isn't the end. There's still time." He says, and there seems to be a hint of feeling in his voice, instead of the deep, emotionless voice. "It wasn't the skull."

John looks up from his shoulder in disbelief and Sam drops his hand that's holding the lighter.

"It was never the skull." Sherlock shakes his head slowly. "It was me and John. Our love still lasts in the flat, and any couple that moves into 221B together will feel the love that still remains. It was never the skull."

"I still have to burn your bones. It's the rules." Sam says quietly.

"Who says you have to follow them?" Sherlock smirks, then straightens up again and kisses John on the forehead. "Please, let us back into 221B. Good things will happen, we're not vengeful, you saw us. We saved you."

Sam debates for what seems like hours, until he lays on his stomach and fishes the skull out of the grave.

They did save me after all.

They just want to help people fall in love.

They're just ghosts who want to stay loved by each other on earth. Neither of them had enough time here. If needed, some other hunter can take care of this in the future.

He hands the skull to Sherlock and smiles as he begins filling the grave back up. He still feels guilt, but the feeling of satisfaction, and doing the world good overcomes that. Looking to his right, the ghosts are gone and he smiles as he pats down the last patch of earth.

As he walks away, Sherlock and John appear behind him, both smiling, the skull no longer in Sherlock's hand, probably sitting on the mantle at 221B right now.  "There's still time Sam. Don't abandon your brother and the angel. They may not have stayed in 221B for the whole night, but their love is strong enough on their own. Have faith in their love." Sherlock genuinely smiles for the first time Sam has known him, and they disappear.

Sam shoves his fists in his pockets and begins to walk to the motel, a smile on his face the whole time.
