Sunflower follows me out. I try to get her to go back, but decide she's better off with me. My father would kill her if he found her.
The weather is chilly. Leaves cover the ground. The tree branches are bald from fall. "Hello, winter," I say, shivering. I put my jacket on and hop in the passenger seat. Sunflower tries to follow me in, but we force her to the backseat. She quickly follows orders. What a lovely dog.
Jose jumps in the drivers seat and says, "So. There's seven of us against the world right now. We ain't letting this mission be our last. Everyone have one gun and one knife?"
Everyone grunts in reply.
"Good. Got some ammo and food and water in a bag. This shouldn't take us too long if we do this shit smart." Jose turns on the van and then turns to me and says with a slightly irritated tone, "This is your mission. Tell us some ground rules."
I stare at him, shocked and nervous. That's a lot of pressure. But this is what I wanted, this is what I need. I turn in my seat to look at everyone. "First I want to thank you all for coming. Also thank you David for letting us use this van. This isn't going to be an easy job, but we need to get these medical supplies. I have a goal and, Wesley, I sure as hell hope you can help me with it. Right now we all need to get to the hospital safely, make no unecessary stops, and protect Wesley the best we can. No one goes anywhere alone, not even to take a shit. We have to stick together or we aren't going to make it back. Got it?"
Everyone nods.
Jose takes us on the road and we begin our journey.
"So, what exactly are we doing? What's your goal?" Sylvia asks.
"You guys are going to think I'm a complete idiot. And insane. And you're gonna laugh at me. But I've seen too many people die from this damn infection. Chris, someone I've known from childhood, someone I love dearly, is sick. He saved my life so many times. I'm not letting him die. We need a cure, and we need it fast."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" David says aloud. "You think by going to a hospital we can find a cure?"
Jose looks in the mirror at David and says, "I know it sounds like she's shitting magical cookies out of her ass but it's worth a shot. Is it not?"
No one disagrees.
"So you think because I'm a scientist, or was, I can help you with a cure?" Wesley laughs. "You're insane."
I turn to the little man with an infuriated glare. "Wesley, I need you. I've done research, and of course not nearly enough research as I need to, but I think this is possible."
"You're insane!" Wesley says.
"Look, I'm going to tell you guys something that I haven't told anyone. A man I met a few weeks ago, who was a doctor, gave me a lot of insight in this virus or disease or whatever. And I've been doing some research on rabies. And this, whatever all of this shit is, is like a mutated rabies virus."
"You do know that rabies isn't curable, right?" Wesley asks.
"Yes, I know that. And this could be a total shot in the dark but like Jose said. It's worth a shot. And if we don't try, no one might ever. Or it'll never reach us in time. I have a fear that half of us are infected. Right now."
"What do you mean?" Sylvia sits up in her seat, terrified.
"Something Naoto talked about was how it was only older people who started turning at the beginning. They seemed to be the only ones who were getting ill, even without a bite. Now, some people are still getting ill. Without being bit. My father, Dan, he's changing. He's turning. Just like James did."
