"Kate whats happening to you? I've never seen you so wrung out before, go home and get some rest NOW."
"Chris, I'm fine...seriously. I need these hours, pleease."
"If you need help financially I told you what you can do, just go home for now and get some rest."
"Fine, but I'm working the double shift tomorrow. Bye Chris!"
I walk out the door feeling like someone had stomped all over my body. I drew in a deep breath to calm myself because I knew I was on the brink of sleep walking and I still had to go home and take care of my baby brother, Isaac. I got in my old beat up jeep and started the drive home.
On my way home I felt myself starting to nod off and I tied to shake it off. My head hit the drivers side window lightly and the jeep swerved off the path. Luckily I wasn't speeding because the jeep glided off the road and onto the dirt path and stopped after rolling a couple of yards. I woke up by a soft breath blowing in my face, which smelt just like chocolate. My eyes opened wider and found a guy two inches from my face examining it intently.
"Who the fuck are you? A..and what are you doing in my jeep?! Get out! "
The guy jumped back, completely taken aback by my rudeness. "Whoa! Hey, take it easy! I was just trying to make sure that you're okay. I'll get out now."
But for some reason he stayed right where he was, staring at me again with that weird expression on his face. I knew him from somewhere but I couldn't put my finger on it. His face looked different, his expressions weren't as bright as I would have recalled. He had raven black hair streaked with blue highlights that fell across his brow, huge brown eyes rimmed wtih eye lashes that cretaed shadows on those fine cheek bones of his. I knew he was tall because he looked too big and awkward in my jeep. I didn't mind the way his muscles were showing against his tight t-shirt either. And for some ridiculous reason I didn't really want this familiar stranger to go. I blinked and cleared my throat. That seemed to jar him out of his trance.
"Right, I was just leaving." he opened the my car door slightly and started to slide off the seat.
"Wait! Uhmmm..." I guess I forgot how to speak because I found no words for this boy.
He stopped and lingered at my door. "Yeah?"
"Uhmm thanks...for making sure I was okay. I just had a really long night."
"No problem" he said with a wolfish smile. "And its Xander."
"Excuse me?"
He got back into my jeep and closed the door making sure he was comfortable. I smirked at how "My names Xander, just thought if you were going to thank me you could thank me properly." Thick sarcasm was laced through his words.
A small shiver ran down my spine as I heard his name. All of a sudden my speech impedement was gone and in came my own sarcasm. "Saying thank you once is enough seeing as how you don't sound very deserving of it."
He feigned hurt as he looked slyly at me through his hooded eyes. Damnit why should I be noticing this when he was clearly being a douche?
"This is what I get for checking to see you're alright. Well I guess if thats it I'll be on my way." He jumped out of my jeep and headed to his own car parked on the dirt road a few yards ahead of mine.
I noticed he had a lot of stuff in it and assumed he was going somewhere. I turned my ignition to get my jeep heated up when I hear a tap on my window. I rolled down my window and looked at him impatiently. Apparently I had been right about him going somewhere because just then he asked me "Hey again, uhmm I know we just met but I honestly need help finding a friends house. By the way what did you say your name was?"
"I didn't say what my name was, and I guess I could help you but I need to get home soon."
He beamed at me and said "Great! I'll just show you where I need to go and we can be on our way." He went back to his car, pulled out a giant map and shoved it into my face. "I need to get to this mountain side, my friend lives there and I'm staying at his place for a while so I can get a job and get my own apartment or something..." he kept talking, filling up the silence with nervous chat. I just stared at the map and that irritating feeling came back. I kenw him from somewhere but for the life of me I couldn't remember him! Xander stopped talking and I realized I hadn't heard a word he had said. I knew the place where Xander needed to be so I told him the instructions and helped him describe out landmarks. Xander shoved the map into his pocket glanced up at me, smiled and said "Well thanks again for your help, maybe I'll see you around sometime."
I laughed and said "Right, maybe." I thought to myself, maybe if I had more time to myself. If I wasn't so busy with taking care of my brother, my job, and starting my frist year of college. Why did they force me to grow up so fast? I growled to myself. Thinking of my past wasn't going to do me any good so I focused on Xander again.
I guess I had an irritated look on my face because he said "No seriously, I just moved here and I wouldn't mind hanging out with you. Maybe you could show me around, say friday? We could meet somewhere for lunch."
My heart lurched at the idea of Xander and I hanging out together at one of my favorite beaches. But I tossed that idea aside as soon as it came. No, there was never going to be a guy in my life. Not after what I've been through, I'm just not ready. Sighing deeply I turned to him, "No, sorry I can't." I started my engine and was about to take off when Xander grabbed my arm, and I gasped involuntarily.
It wasn't like what I thought it would be. There was no electricity when we touched. Instead there was this slow spreading warmth that took control of me. Made my stay where I was. I couldn't even meet his eyes because this feeling was too good to be true.
Xander didn't let go of my arm. Not knowing exactly what he was doing, he slid his hand slowly down to my hand and took hold of it. Spreading the warmth throughout my whole entire body. This oddly familiar boy made me want to stay where I was and look into his puppy dog eyes. I finally looked at him and noticed that his cheeks were slightly pink. He's actually shy! Knowing he wasn't all that confident and cocky made me feel slightly better about myself. This didn't make my case any better though.
"What about Saturday? Are you free then?" he asked shyly.
I gently took his hand out of mine, looked at him and said very carefully "No, I'm never going to be free." I drove off then. Not wanting to see his reaction, knowing all too well how true my words were. Because of my irresponsible parents there was no freedom for me. My future was set in stone.
