JEFF ATKINS WAS DYING. He must've been. He was surrounded by mounts of papers stacked on top of one another. It seemed as if he was stuck in an endless spiral of homework assignments.
Clay had given him extra work after their previous tutoring session and he had struggled to get it done before their next one. He was in study hall, trying his best to work through each algebra equation, and every history problem. If a year ago you told Jeff Atkins he would actually be studying in study hall, he would've laughed in your face.
Oh how the times have changed, he thought to himself. Sighing, he looked down at the algebra worksheet that was covered in his messy handwriting. "Having trouble?" A soft voice asked, creeping up behind him. Spinning around, the baseball player became face to face with the one and only; Madison De La Cruz.
"Just algebra." He said after a second, of admiring her beauty. "Gross, what are you working on? Maybe I can help." She smiled, sitting down next to him. He showed her the problem and she grabbed a lined piece of paper out of his binder.
He watched as she scribbled down the answers, erasing and rewriting many times. He watched her long enough to notice that she bites her bottom lip when she's confused and he found it quite adorable. "Don't you have a class right now?" Jeff asked her, coming to the realization that they didn't share this period together. "Ms. Johnson sent me up to the library to work on a project. I finished it a while ago so I get this period free." She shrugged, slipping the paper over to him. "Here."
"Wow." Jeff said, looking down at all the letters and numbers scrawled across the paper. "I didn't write the answer out because I thought you should do that part yourself. Although, I did simplify the equation and break it down a lot so it should be much easier now."
"Thank you. People usually just give up on me and write the answer for me. It makes me feel pretty stupid." Jeff said softly, glancing down at the table and twiddling with his pencil in between his fingers. "Hey," Madison said, placing her hand on top of his. "You aren't stupid. I think it's really great that you're trying so hard to get your grades up."
The Atkins boy flashed her a genuine smile and offered a nervous chuckle. "Thanks, Mads."
"Hey, do you wanna do something after school?" Madison asked, hiding the blush that crept up her cheeks. "I have practice. But I'd love to do something after?" He offered. "Sure, I have to run home after school but I can pick you up from practice? You didn't drive here did you?"
"No, I caught a ride with some of the guys." The the toss of her hair, Madison looked up and smiled. "Sounds like a plan."

"AS IF YOU just called out Clay on Instagram." Madison said, laughing. "I love the kid but, he has zero balls."
The pair was perched in a booth as Rosie's diner, drinking their separate milkshakes. This was Madison's favourite place to eat. It wasn't as crowded at Monet's but it wasn't totally unknown either. "How was practice?" Madison asked, taking a sip from her chocolate milkshake. "Long. You're brother didn't waste anytime sending me glares." The two erupted into loud laughter and Madison rolled her eyes playfully.
"He's so annoying." She groaned, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "But I love him. He just likes to protect me."
"I think it's sweet." Jeff said, smiling at her. She returned the gesture and took another sip of her milkshake.
"So tell me about yourself, De La Cruz. We may have been friends for awhile but I hardly know anything about you." The brunette thought about the question for a minute. "Alright, my favourite colour is black, I live with my brother and parents, I love to party, and the only thing Bryce Walker and I have in common is our hate for Courtney Crimsen. Your turn."
"My favourite colour is blue, I love baseball, I also love to party, and I have found myself quite infatuated with a certain brunette." He said with a smirk. "Does this brunette have a name by any chance?" She said, mirroring his expression. He hummed in response, taking another sip of his milkshake. "Starts with M, ends with adison."
"You're quite the charmer, Jeff Atkins." A pink hue, painted her cheeks causing her to duck her head in an attempt to hide. "And you're beautiful, Madison De La Cruz."
