Two: All Work, No Play

Kate sat at her desk going through the pile of paperwork. Her class had just ended, and she took a second to catch up on midterms. The semester was just getting underway and she knew this was a busy time.
Her schedule went like this , she would rise at four in the morning while Cameron and Ruth slept. She would make her usual pot of coffee. The sun wasn't up around this time yet, so after a hot shower she read the newspaper for a while. The scramble eggs and bacon were her normal breakfast then she left around five.
It was a decent drive to the university, where she greeted her fellow professors and read through homework. Cameron would make sure Ruth was up and ready for school before getting himself ready to drop her off over his sisters Natalie's house. Natalie was his younger sister, who had been watching Ruth since she was two years old. She had recently got married and was preparing to move out of town. It was unfortunate, because they would need a babysitter quickly.
Kate's day was productive, of course teaching psychology wasn't for everyone. But this is what she studied for her entire life. What makes the human mind tick? Why do we make the choices we make? What are our hopes and dreams? What do we fear the most? Why do we love? Her long hours at the university didn't allow her to do what she use to. In some ways she had become wrapped up in teaching. It was all she knew. She spent long hours sitting by her fireplace alone. Her dark brown eyes had a sadness to them.
After Ruth was born, she was able to escape her prison for a while. That's what Ruth brought her. It was that joy .... then things didn't seem so bad. She hated to leave Ruth at times. It gutted her like a fish, but her work needed her it was selfish and she knew it. She hated herself for leaving Ruth, and often thought about retiring from teaching. But what would she go to? What would fill that void? The family finances were good.....not perfect by any means.
Kate snapped out of her daydream to greet her good friend Rosie Hernandez. She was from Cuba, but came to the Untied States as a teenager. They were the same ages, Rosie was a business professor.  She had long black hair,  a small build and wore the brightest red lipstick. She had been teaching for ten years at the university. They became close after the accident.
"How is the family holding up?"
" It's getting better for us" Kate said. Rosie smiled holding Kate's hand.
"We are praying for your family" she said. That made Kate tear up, if anyone besides Pastor Adams knew of her struggle it was Rosie. She had been there ..... she saw the pain , the heartache. There moment was interrupted by students filing in for a class. Kate returned to her escape even if for only a little while.
