It was Saturday, My mom and I decided to go visit my grandmother it's been awhile since I've seen her or allowed to see her. Before my father was put into jail for some strange reason we weren't allowed to see. My mother didn't know why either it was strange too. The last I saw her was when I was 5 years old. We pulled up on her drive she hasn't moved out of that small house of hers that my mother grew up in. I got out of the car and the first person that greeted me was a dog named Jessiebelle. I remember when she was really small now she is a big beautiful Golden Retriever. My grandmother soon came out and she greeted me and mother.
"Look how much you have grown Jenny!" She said to me smiling.
"Thank you Grandmama." I said to her.
"Here I'll make us some coffee mother." My mom said walking inside. I let my grandmother walked in first then I walked in after her. I sat on her floral couch nothing really much has changed she stills as her decorative plates hanging on the wall, old pictures of my Grandmama, Grandpapa, and my mother when they were young.
"You look so much like your mother when she was around your age Jenny!" my grandmother said placing a tray of cookies on the table.
"Thank you!" I said to her taking a cookie off the plate.
"Tell me! Did you find anyone special? Or like anyone in your school? Like a boy perhaps?" She said to me.
"Grandmama!" I said to her feeling embarrassed.
"Just kidding! Just kidding!" She said jokingly and laughing. I was eating my cookie until I found an old photo album.
"Grandmama? Can I look at this photo album that is right there? Please." I asked her.
"Of course! You can look as long you don't tell your grandfather of what you might find." She said jokingly. I laughed and I took the photo album and looked at it. I open the cover and there was my grandmother when she was around my age or younger. I continued to look through more until this one picture caught my attention. It was my grandmother with this girl that I've been seeing her almost everywhere.
"Grandmama? Who is this?" I asked her pointing to the picture.
"Oh! That's my best friend! Her name was Alice Winston." she said to me. I instantly had chilled up my spine when she said her name.
"Really?" I questioned.
"Yes! Me and her were childhood friends! We went to the same Grade school, middle, and high! She was always the top of everyone in the class." She said.
"What happened to her? If you don't mind if I asked." I said to her.
"It was quite the tragedy," my grandmother paused for a bit, "it was the fall of 1955, 5 days before her 16th birthday." She finally said. "Alice was an idol for everyone big or small, young or old she always had the brightest smile out of all of us here in this small town. Bright yellow eyes like the sun, fair smooth skin like a porcelain doll, a beauty that is unimaginable that she took every guy here in Kansas breath away! Until one day she was walking by herself I usually walked with her but I had to help farmer John with his cattle. I don't know much of it all I know that she died on her 16th birthday. I attended the funeral however it was not an open casket it was closed shut. Whomever did that to sweet little Alice will never be forgiven of their sins." She said holding tears back.
"I see.....I'm sorry to hear it Grandmama." I said to her with sympathy.
"It's okay little Jenny, after all I took you a few times to see her when you were little." She said with a smile.
"One more question Grandmama." I said to her.
"What is it dear?" She asked.
"Why did my father forbid us from seeing you?" I asked.
"Your father said that you weren't safe here, that an evil entity was after you I don't know what he was talking about but he sure sounded crazy!" she said to me laughing.
"Thank you Grandmama! I really appreciate that you answered my questions." I said to her with a smile.
"No problem sweetheart! Now go wash up I'm making green bean casserole!" She said walking to the kitchen. As I watch her leave I looked back at the picture, I don't know much about this girl but I need answers now! If my father knew about this then he must know a lot more than I do. I continue to think about things until I noticed something behind a picture of Grandmama when she was 17. I set the book down to the side of me and walked up to it. It was slanted a bit I tried to fix it back to place but it stayed slanted. I left it be and I walked back to the couch as I did the picture fell off the wall. I looked back and I walked back to the picture to pick it up and set it down on the table next to me. The nail seemed to be loose so I went to go grab a hammer and hammer the nail back to where it was. After I finished that part I grabbed the picture, as I was about to the picture I felt something was behind it. I turned the picture around and behind it was a small key taped to the back of the picture. I took the key thinking it might be important. I put the picture back to where it was and put the key in my pocket. My Grandmama soon called me for dinner and I walked back to the dining room keeping my eye on the picture as I leave.
