From Bad to Worse

"You didn't seriously...?"

"Yep."

"Does that mean...?"

"Quite probably."

"Ah...shit." the young teen swore under his breath.

Alex brushed through his short choppy blond hair to try to get rid of the escalating anxiety that was building up in his chest. His bare feet padded across the dark wooden floors back and forth in his guardian's office.  Alex took off his glasses to rub the bridge of his nose before staring at his best friend Matthias.

Matthias was not your normal sixteen-year-old boy. In fact, Alex wasn't sure that 'normal' was even part of his vocabulary of words. The young man was like a castle fortress, sturdy and bulky in form. Matthias's muscular and tall height of six foot three was very misleading to the parents who thought it was impossible for a sixteen-year-old such as Matthias to be so tall.

It also didn't help that Matthias always grew out his natural platinum blond hair just below the shoulders and even took the time to braid the hair strands together at the back so it wouldn't get in his face. Matthias was from Denmark and moved to Canada when he was a young boy.

Our classmates never missed a chance of calling him an "elf" or better yet "Legolas" that pretty elf archer from the Lord of the Rings movies.

Alex never thought in his entire life that his normal hangouts with Matthias would take the weirdest of turns. Matthias was an elf and he didn't tell him at all, or the fact that he could cast spells and summon anything he wanted. Before him, he couldn't stop eyeing Matthias holding a small dark green book that was about the size of his palm, embroidered with what looked like golden Celtic knots on the spine and some sort of unknown language carved onto the cover that Alex assumed was ruins.

The awkward silence was interrupted by Matthias, who looked quite apologetic about the current situation they were in. His light blue eyes pleading the same way a dog would when they did something the owner didn't approve of.

"Don't worry Alex I got this covered. I am one hundred percent a certified sorcerer. We Elves are very skilled in the arts of magic. All we got to do is find the troll and return it back to where it came from before your guardian returns."

"Oh I wouldn't be freaking out about finding a bloody troll if it wasn't invisible." the sarcasm that was dripping from Alex's mouth only made Matthias flinch a bit.

"Well it couldn't possibly get any worse-" Matthias started to talk when he stopped midsentence to hear a loud crashing noise come from the kitchen.

The two boys looked at each other before Alex pushed Matthias in front of him.

"Think again elf-man it just got a whole lot worse. You are the sorcerer here so there is no need for me to go in first against a troll and lose my head."

"But trolls don't eat human heads."

"Whatever man, let's get a move on ASAP."

The boys raced down the narrow staircase that directly faced the large kitchen. The scene before them looked as if a robbery was committed just seconds ago. The clean cups and plates were thrown onto the floor, broken and shattered, just like how Alex was feeling at that very moment. The sandwiches that Alex's guardian so kindly made before he went to work were crushed onto the floor without a single care in the world.

Alex held his breath as his eyes finally made contact with a blurry figure hunched over the fridge.

Oh god, I really hope that troll isn't eating my chocolate cake. Alex thought fearfully.
