Chapter 2: Reed and Stacey
As the wind swirled around me, I noticed someone watching me from the other side of the fence to my left. I stopped abruptly, afraid and confused. Has he been there the whole time? To make matters worse, he starts to talk.
He clears his throat.
"Ehem... sorry to startle you, but I haven't seen anyone live in that house since I was born. Are you living here now? I saw that for sale sign that said sold and was just wondering... but you looked so happy there in the yard that I didn't really want to bother you..." He trailed off.
"Um, yea I just moved here. It's ok. You didn't scare me, well at least not too bad... who are you? I think I failed to get your name?..." I say casually trying not to panic.
"My names Reed. Reed Foster. And you are?"
"Alissa Arnold."
"Nice to meet you, Alissa. I guess we're neighbors now. Welcome to NC."
I take in his image quickly. Tall, fit, curly dark hair and dark eyes. I think I'm going to faint. Oh no...
"Thank you...", I choke out.
" What grade are you in?", He asks.
"11, junior in highschool. I'm going to Jackson high." I say unsurely.
"Really? I go there too! I'm a senior. Maybe I'll see you around?" He says.
"Yea. definitely." I say gaining confidence.
"See you around", He says waving goodbye.
"You too."
I watch him go back into his house before being scared again by a high pitched scream.
"Whaaa...?" I manage out right before someone hops over the opposite side of the fence.
"I never thought I'd get a girl neighbor!" Someone shrieks.
"Uhh..."
A girl about my size appears in front of me gasping for air.
"Hi! I'm Stacey Donald. How are you? What's your name?" She quickly says sticking her hand out in front of her.
I take the hand and shake it loosely.
"I'm good, and I'm Alissa Arnold." I say.
"Nice to meet you! Did you just move in?"
"Yeah, actually just half an hour ago..."
"Cool! What grade are you in?" Stacey asks getting excited.
"I'm a junior."
"Oh my gosh! Me too!" She shrieks again.
"We are going to be the best of friends!"
"I'm sure we will be", I say smiling.
"Hey, can you come over to my house in an hour, and I could go show you around town if you want!" She says.
"That would be great!"
"Alright! I'm that house right there to your right, see?"
She points her finger toward the direction of the way she came in.
"I see."
"Good! See you in an hour!" She says happily and runs back over the fence, jumping into her own yard.
I couldn't stop smiling. Had I just made two friends in thirty minutes? Heck yeah I did! Maybe this year it would be different... maybe this is home.
