Proof

" So let me get this straight," says John, " So you knew Moriarty was alive. Yeah?"

I nod, "Yes, I was waiting for him to show up and keep playing. I knew it'd only be a matter of time. "

John nods, " Okay... But why did you ask him about how he survived? You obviously knew the answer, and Moriarty knew that you knew. "

I lean back in the chair, " I needed proof. Sebastian Moran exists, and isn't just some made up person that Moriarty created. "

"Proof? You didn't get proof. He mentioned Moran and said that he had him as a backup. But you jumped so Moran wasn't useful, that is if he was ever there in the first place."

" Moran was never there the day I jumped. Even if he was, he wouldn't have shot me. Like Moriarty said, 'It's rather dull playing with ordinary people.' " I repeat in my best impersonation of Moriarty. " James Moriarty didn't want to risk loosing me. It was a bluff."

" So how do you know Moran is real?"asks John, a bit confused. I look at John. My eyes flicker to his wound then back to his face. John's eye's widen a bit , knowing the answer. " Oh... I see. He's the one that shot me."

I nod, " Moran is- was a Colonel. He's very good with a gun and is an incredible marksman. Moriarty was just showing him off."

John shakes his head, " Sometimes I wonder why we're friends. I mean, all that I get out of this friendship is pain." John lets the words hang between us. He looks at me and all I can see is pain. He's still hurt. Hurt from when I jumped off the building, hurt from when I didn't tell him the truth, hurt from his wounds, physical and mental. Underneath all his soldier facade, is a broken man. A man that's being held together by something fragile, something that could break at any given time. Funny, he reminds me of myself sometimes. "But," continues John, breaking through the torturous silence, " I think I secretly enjoy it."

I can't help but smile, " You're attracted to danger, John. You know you are." He returns my smile. There's a mischievous glint in his eye.

" You're right. So, what do we do about Moriarty?"
