i met you on new years eve
you were older
not by much, at all
but at our age it seemed numbers were the only thing that mattered
and i could tell you looked down on me
but that's okay
i looked up to you so much it balanced everything out
later, as everyone was out celebrating
we were upstairs talking
in our own little world
and for a second, i thought your feelings changed
just for a moment, i swear you looked at me differently
they all saw it too
"he kept staring at you" they'd tease me when they finally came upstairs and broke us out of our trance
you didn't notice
or maybe you did, but you pretended not to hear a word
you just smiled at them all and started a conversation
you talked with everyone but me
you never spoke to me again
how did you play my heart so perfectly?
