it had been a long day
we were both tired
but that didn't stop us from laughing at each others jokes, and smiling whenever we bumped knees
bonding over our love of topo chico and never fitting in
i walked you home
"it's okay, i can go alone" you assured me
"no, it's fine" i said as i looked outside the window to see heavy, cold raindrops hit the pavement
we walked quickly, but that only made it worse
we hid under the awning of the yellow house next to yours
we stood there silently, appreciating the mere proximity of our situation as we huddled under the house
you reached down and your arms wrapped around my waist tightly
i wrapped my arms around your neck, gripped your tshirt and pulled your hair
we stayed there like that
how nieve we were
how cliche this all was
i thought
we separated slowly
slow enough for me to see the raindrops on your eyelashes and the freckles on your nose
i thought we were going to kiss
i think you thought so too
but as a car drove by the headlights knocked us back into reality
and we were back to being friends
just friends
