hui made sure to wake up early that tuesday morning, blinking his eyes open and shut several times to adjust to the harsh light shining through the car window. he sat up, holding himself in place with a shaky palm. it was six am, and he could see the hues of orange and pink from where the sun had recently risen over the vast horizons.
he glanced out the window, where he noticed two deer on the borderline of the forest and the field they were currently in, grazing on the plants nearby. turning his attention back to inside the car, he looked at the two other passengers besides himself.
their faces were scarcely inches apart, and hyuna's small hand was wrapped around e'dawn's thumb, almost like a clingy child. he scrunched his face up with disgust and, as carefully and quietly as possible, pried her warm fingers from his.
his next step was to wake the pale boy up, and he did exactly that, shaking his shoulder harshly and poking his forehead. e'dawn eventually woke with a groan, lugging over onto his back and gazing from the car ceiling and then to the pink-haired boy who had woken him up.
"what?" he questioned in a raspy morning voice, turning on his side. hui opens the car door and climbs into the front seat, starting the engine with a quiet crank. the car hummed to life, and he turned back to the pale boy.
"wake hyuna up and lift up the seats." e'dawn shook his head as he looked down at the red-head, his eyes twinkling with guilt since she looked so peaceful. he glanced to the pink-haired boy, then to her, then to the pink-haired boy once more.
"i don't have to wake her up. i'll lift the seats up myself." he struggles to stand up, more like crouch, in the midst of the car, his head avoiding the absurdly-low ceilings, before placing one arm in the crook of her knee and the othe run the small of her back, lifting her up and easing her down into his arms.
she absentmindedly clung to him as she slept, grabbing a fistful of his soft jacket material in the midst of her slumber. he set her down on the floorboards for a moment before pulling the lever that lurched up the seats into their normal positions, and then lifted her in the same way onto the seats.
hui put the car into reverse, sending the tires spinning as they caught themselves in tiny pits of mud, and then set the car off on the old, desolate country road ahead of them.
e'dawn buckled his seatbelt, and hyuna tossed and turned in her sleep, subconsciously reaching out and feeling around the leather seat. is she looking for my hand? e'dawn wondered. he decided to test the theory and place his hand out, and she greedily wrapped her small hands around his bony thumb, a small smile curving onto her plump lips.
hui sped down the road and looked at the scattered green signs that dotted the edges of the road, always explaining what the next exit was and what type of foods were available there. he enjoyed looking at them, a wonderful blurb of green and the white words swirled together, only visible for a second before he passed them.
