"Will...with...me...?" As Erica and I are trying to listen in on Lisa and Elliot's conversation, people keep talking and makes it hard for us to hear.
"N...so...may...ti..." We see Elliot turn to leave and we immediately know the tears falling from her face aren't ones from joy.
"I HATE BOTH OF YOU!" She yells. Lisa runs to the girl's washroom and we just roll our eyes. So overdramatic.
Elliot saunters over to us like nothing happened. "Hey guys."
"Why did you say yes to a movie with her but then say no to the dance?" I ask. No point in beating around the bush.
"What? I didn't say yes to a movie with her."
"Pass me your phone." He hands me his phone and I pull up the text and show him.
"Shoot. I though she meant a movie with all you guys."
"IDIOT!" Erica says, disguising it with a cough.
"Hey, it's not my fault. I don't see her that way so I never would have guessed that she was asking me out on...a date," Erica rolls her eyes and I punch him in the arm.
"Well because of you she is going to hate us. Good going."
"I'm sowwy. Will you forgive me?" He says it in a little kid's voice with puppy dog eyes. Elli always does this to me. He knows I can't resist his puppy dog eyes!
"Okay, fine," Elli hugs me and I hug him back, halfheartedly.
"What do we do now?" Erica asks after a moment.
"I say you go to talk to her," I suggest. Well, more like nominate.
"Why me?" Erica groans.
"Well she's mad at me for daring her, and you're her best friend!"
Erica scoffs in reply as she knows I'm right. I follow Erica to the washroom but when we reach the entrance I stop and watch Erica enter the danger zone. I stand outside trying to hear them. I can hear them talking, but the words are so muffled that I can't make out the words.
Erica comes back out a while later but she doesn't say anything about it. We've been friends for a while, but we don't keep secrets from each other. It's either tell everyone or no one with the four of us. Since when has this unsaid promise been broken?
"Okay...anyways...I'm going to uh...go...bye...?" Erica awkwardly leaves me standing there alone. Okay then. I walk through the halls looking for either Sofie or Elli.
"Ena!" Sofie shouts from down the hall. Perfect. Now I don't have to look like a loser with no friends.
"Hey Sofie. Sorry I kind of ditched you. I had to check on Lisa."
"It's okay, I understand. Just because I'm mad at her doesn't mean you have to be." Sofie shrugs her shoulders. This is what I love about Sofie. She understands me so well.
"Well guess what? Something crazy happened. Erica is keeping secrets from us. Secrets between her and Lisa."
"It was bound to happen eventually. At least we have each other, right? You wouldn't keep secrets from me, would you?" Sofie genuinely asks. To anyone else, this would be the perfect chance to give up their deepest, darkest secrets. I, on the other hand, decide to keep it to myself.
"Of course. You too, right?"
"Right." We hug and laugh.
Many people have hurt me in my life. My parents, my siblings, my friends, but NEVER Elli. I have taught myself not to trust anyone because they will just hurt me. I can only trust Elli. The fact that I just had to lie to Sofie hurts me down to my very core, but I couldn't help it. Sometimes little lies must be told to prevent not-so-little tears.
"Ena!" A small voice shouts. I release Sofie and turn to face the familiar voice.
"Hey, Kai!" I say to my little brother.
"Ena, I need your help." I look closely at my 7 year old brother. I see that there are tears building up in his eyes. After his classes finish, he's supposed to walk to my school, which is just down the street from his, so I can walk him home.
"What's wrong, buddy?" I bend down so I'm at eye-level with him.
"There's..." He pauses to gasp for air and I look over his head to see Sofie mouthing "SO CUTE" to me. "There's this girl..." Another pause. "And I like her..." A tear falls from his cheek. Behind him, Sofie is practically dying because Kai is being so adorable. "And today when I told her I liked her..." He pauses again.
"Aww...she doesn't like you back?" I embrace him and rub his back to calm him down.
"No...she said...she liked me back..."
"Then what's the problem, Kai?"
"This boy, Wyatt, started bullying her because he heard us talking..." More tears fall and I realize these tears aren't for himself. They're for someone else. They're for a girl.
"C'mon Kai. Lets go back to the school and see if they're still there. Alright? Does that sound good?"
"Okay...thank you, Ena." I stand up properly and he hugs my legs.
"Sofie, you going to come with me to teach this bully a lesson?"
"Of course! Anything for Kai!" Sofie ruffles his hair and Kai smiles. Kai doesn't know it, but he's Sofie's favourite out of all my siblings, and Sofie doesn't know it, but Kai had the cutest crush on Sofie before. I guess it's time to pay this bully a visit (and possibly Kai's new girlfriend...if you know what I mean).
