"What did you say his name was? Wayne?" I ask Kai, who has his hand wrapped around my pointer finger.
"No...Wy...Wyatt." He stutters. It sounds like it hurts for him just to say his name because he winces.
"Alright well, here we are so see if you can spot him." He takes a long glance through the school yard, stopping for a second if he thinks he has spotted him. At last he sees him. I can tell because once he does, he takes a step back like he's scared. It's so cute and so sad to see him like this.
"That's him huh?" I ask, nodding my head towards a boy playing on the playground with a dark green shirt and black pants. Kai just nods. "Let's go Sofie. No one can bully one of Kai's friends." We start walking towards the boy. As I get closer I realize that he has a scowl on his face and he is yelling at a few kids on the playground. "Wyatt." I state. Not to intimidate him or anything, just to let him know I'm there."
"Yeah, what do you want?" He turns to face me and that's when he realizes that I aren't a little 7 year old. "I mean...uh...hello...tall girl..." He stutters and I can tell he's scared.
"Is it true you were bullying Kai's friend? More importantly, A GIRL?" I'll give him a chance to confess. Out of the goodness of my heart.
"No..." He turns slightly and scowls at Kai. He must have thought I hadn't seen, but I definitely did.
"Let me get this straight, little boy. First, you bully an innocent girl for no good reason. Then you were disrespectful to those around you. Then you were rude to me. Then you scowled at my brother. Now you are lying to me. You expect me to walk away thinking you're innocent?" Before he can answer a very beautiful women in her mid twenties comes up to us.
"Hello, I'm Wyatt's mother. Is there a problem?" How can someone so rude be related to someone so beautiful and caring?
"No, mom." Wyatt says a little to quickly. Oh, I see, he's scared of her.
"Actually, you see, I was just asking Wyatt a few questions. My little brother, Kai, who is in the same class as Wyatt, cane to me today in tears. I asked him what had happened and he said that your child, Wyatt, was being mean to his friend just because he overheard them talking about something private. By no means was I going to do anything irrational to Wyatt, I was just going to ask him if he could not do that to Kai again because it upset him so much." I finally finish my mini speech and Wyatt's mom finally looks down to Kai. He has a red nose and puffy eyes from crying and he is still fighting against his crying for air. A look of sympathy crosses her face and then a look of disappointment replaced it as she looks over to her son.
"Wyatt, you are in so much trouble. I would like you to say sorry to...Kai...and his older sister for being so inconsiderate and rude." Wyatt rolls his eyes and mutters an apology. "I am truly very sorry. I hope that it didn't cause too much of an emotional impact. Thank you for informing me, I never would have known."
"No need to apologize, Ma'am. It wasn't your fault and I was just looking out for my little brother." She gives me one last smile and then she drags Wyatt away. I can't tell what she's saying, but I can assure you Wyatt is in DEEP trouble.
"How are you feelin' little buddy?" Sofie asks in a soft tone. I can tell she feels sorry for him.
Kai sniffles a little bit, trying to figure out what to say. "Yeah. I'm just glad that she's safe now." What blows my mind is that even at 7 years old, Kai knows to put other people before himself. It almost brings tears to my eyes because I'm so proud of him.
Sofie and I don't say anything. We just smile at him, and then at each other. I know we are thinking the same thing. Ice cream. We start walking towards the parlour. "Kai, you still haven't told me this girl's name." Sofie points out. I didn't even notice until now.
"I don't want to tell you." He says. Why wouldn't he want to tell us?
"Why not?"
"It's a secret." And with that he runs off.
When we reach the ice cream shop Kai jumps up and down in anticipation for his favourite treat. No doubt he's going to get the triple chocolate chip fudge with extra brownie bits.
"Kai, are you going to tell mom?"
"'Bout what?" He says with his mouth full of ice cream.
"About your girlfriend, duh." Sofie answers for me. I nudge her for being mean but she just laughs.
"Yeah. I tell mom EVERYTHING." Kai says it like there's no other way to live. Sofie and I both laugh.
"Okay, you keep thinking that. Are you almost done with your ice cream?" I look down at his cup. He only has a big scoopful left. Kai looks down, scoops up every little bit, and stuffs it into his mouth. Boys are boys. Whether they are 7, 17, or 27.
On our way back to the house we take a quick detour so we can walk Sofie back to her house. "Bye Sofie!"
I shout when we part ways."Bye Ena, bye Kai!" Sofie starts waving goodbye to us.
"Bye bye!" Kai shouts jumping up and down for whatever reason.
