A scream was heard in the furthest part of the village, and the community was anxious. For the child that will be born today was to be their doom or their deliverance. The king, his chief adviser Fhumulani Mudzuri and the elders were sitting anxiously outside the hut where the chief adviser's wife was going through labour. The birth of a girl child meant salvation to the people of Nzhelele, whereas the birth of the male child would mean doom. That's what the king's traditional healer said.
"What will we do if it's a boy child, my king?" asked the chief adviser who was now tapping his feet furiously against the floor.
"We shall cross that bridge when we get there, now could you please stop making noise I'm trying to think.'' Replied the king, king Avhatakali Mulaudzi was loved by his people for having wisdom and a kind heart. He was worried for his friend and for his people because the gender of the child his friend's wife gave birth to, meant the destruction or the salvation of his people. The girl child would become his son's wife therefore healing his people, whereas the boy child was believed he would betray his people when he grew up.
Meanwhile, in the hut;Mrs Maria Mudzuri was tired and in pain, she has been in labour for over twelve hours and the baby just would not come out. The midwife Mukona was very worried, she could see her patient slowly giving up and she knew that will get her in trouble.
''I can see the head, you just need to push one last time. "The midwife said as she looked between Mrs Mudzuri's legs.
''I am very tired, I don't think I can." Replied Maria who was slowly giving in to fatigue.
''of course you can, you are going to give birth to a healer and the future queen of our people. Now push. "The midwife ordered, and as tired as Maria was she pushed with all her might and the child was born.
''it's a girl. It's a girl.'' Shouted the midwife and her assistance ululated.
"Why is she not crying? "Asked one of the assistants.
"I do not know, let's take her to the king. "Replied the midwife who was already walking out of the hut.
As soon as she stepped outside, she baby cried and it started raining heavily resulting in the midwife retreating. The king and the elders entered the hut opposite Maria's.
"It's a girl! It's a girl!" shouted one of the elders happily.
"Her name shall be Mudanamvula Gundo Mudzuri. And she will be the queen of our people. "The king said happily. As people were still celebrating the birth of their healer, another scream was heard in the hut where Maria was.
"Why is she screaming again?" Mr Mudzuri asked as he went closer to the hut.
"I'll go see. "Replied the midwife as she closed the door and handed the child to one of her assistants to clean. As she looked at Maria she realised that another baby was coming. "Quickly bring another towel, another baby is coming. "' she said to one of her assistants who obliged.
"Okay Maria, push again. Another baby is coming. "Maria pushed again and the baby was born. It was a boy and as soon as he cried the rain stopped and a very strong wind blew. The assistants ran out of the hut screaming.
"What is it? "Asked Maria who was looking worried. As the midwife was about to answer the door opened and the king, Mr Mudzuri and the elders entered the hut and looked at the child in the midwife's hands. Jaws dropped and gasps were heard:
"Our doom! "The king exclaimed before Maria lost consciousness.
