My muscles locked, and my mind could not comprehend what I was seeing, it was almost like I was watching from a distance, someone else’s life, not mine, not my little sister who was in the hands of death.
Katie’s eyes were as wide as saucers in shock, and her mouth was caught in a silent scream. I swear my heart stopped, and then restarted going faster than it ever had before. I realized that Alex, along with Daisy and Dianna had just walked through the door. I heard Daisy gasp in horror, and Dianna screamed. My heart sunk a little lower. I didn’t want my friends in this, whatever it was, and now they were placed in the middle.
I found my voice again, and I remembered hearing about a woman who had lifted a car, trying to save her daughter. That was how I felt at that moment, that I would do anything, even give my own life or lift a car to save my little sister. “LET HER GO!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, sheer anger egging me on. Alex was the only one who stayed calm, his mouth in a tight line.
“Leave Violet and her sister out of this Venen, she doesn’t have what you are looking for.” He said cryptically, with a glance in my direction. My anger at Alex partly shifted toward Alex, because he was keeping secrets from me, because he could stay so calm when my world was falling apart. Venen smiled. “But then, even if Violet doesn’t have the elixir, than I can use her,” Venen yanked up on Katie’s hair. “as bait. You shouldn’t have grown attached Alex; it was always your weakness.” I had no idea what Venen was talking about.
“But why Venen? Why kill for something that wasn’t meant for you? You don’t know the side effects, it might kill you.” Alex replied. “But you already gave it to Violet!” Venen shouted, “You can’t lie to me, I know you to well, you’re my brother!” I was startled momentarily. This was all a big joke! Venen is Alex’s brother! They were planning this whole thing together the entire time!
Katie whimpered. That little noise, going unnoticed by both Alex and Venen, brought me back to reality from where I was frozen in shock.
With a sudden burst of adrenaline, I said to Venen, “You let her go or I will kill you.” I growled no fear at all in my voice. Venen seemed to have forgotten that I was there, and smiled. That put me over the edge.
I jumped up, and running on pure and unsorted anger, ran up to Venen, snatched up the knife from its place on Katie’s throat, and grabbed my little sister. I took the knife and slashed it at Venen’s hand.
I carried Katie a safe distance away, and looked at Daisy and Dianna who were still standing there, dumbstruck. Dianna’s eyes were quickly moving from each of our faces, her calculating mind trying to figure out what was going on. Dianna then whispered something in Daisy’s ear, and they both ran into the hallway and disappeared.
I looked at Alex, who was surprised and dumbfounded by what I had done. For a moment I saw the edges of his mouth lift up in a quick smile, and then disappear. Venen’s face at first showed surprise and then soon became clouded in anger.
Katie was burying her face into my stomach, her hands around my waist, before I picked her up and her hands and feet curled their way around my body. I turned around on Alex and Venen and walked away to where my mom’s car was waiting. Before I climbed into the car, I whispered into Katie’s ear, “Don’t tell mom.”
