I sat in the grey reclining chair, watching a very concentrated Marley. Her brows were drawn together and the tip of her tongue poked out from in between her pale pink lips. The light blue orbs gleamed in frustration. The grip of her small left hand on my right foot tightened, making my foot jolt.
I gasped and Marley snapped her head up, her eyes narrowed at me. "Fuck! I am about so done with you Elizabeth! Your going to have just two toes painted if you don't stop moving." She warned me and the quickly grabbed a Q-tip soaked with nail polish remover. She mumbled under her breath, as she swiped away the streak of pink.
I bit my tongue trying not to laugh, knowing if I did she'd leave me with only one and a half foot finished. We both knew I could not paint my toes or nails in general for crap. Every time I ever attempted I'd end up seeing Marley and she'd nearly have a heart attack at how atrocious they would turn out. I'll spare the details of how much she'd tell me to never paint my nails. Ever.
She suddenly sat up straight and inched her head back, while beaming. She successfully completed painted another one of my toes and was more than happy with herself. She looked prideful of her task and grinned at me. I laughed at how happy she looked.
Yet as fast as her smile came it left, as she realized she now had toe more little toes to paint. She scooted forwards and concentration fell over her face once again.
I sighed, causing her to pause and cast me a glance. "Don't you even start to complain, you were the one telling me how much you wanted this done." She then carried on.
My head tiled to the side and I glanced at my matching finger nails. "No, I'm not complaining just, you know-"
"Thinking?" She spoke lowly, stealing the word straight from my mouth.
"Yeah, thinking." I continued to admire her steady hands work.
Marley sighed and shook her head, causing a strand that'd she finally tucked away successfully, to fall back to the front of her face. It brushed over her little button nose but she ignored it too engrossed with her "mission". "You know, I'm always here if-"
I groaned cutting her off, no more mushy talk, please.
She stopped, retracted her hand and scowled, "Hey, you listen here you little lizard ass. I'm trying to have one of those heartfelt bff convo's, we have once in a blue moon. So shut your mouth and speak." She then closed her eyes and exhaled and smiled one of those scary soft smiles.
I swallowed and knew if I didn't want pink nail polish everywhere I'd speak. "So you know how I was and still am falling for Jacob? Well, I can't help but think why? Or rather how? I mean I barley know him, but I feel this undeniable pull. Have you ever felt that? Like when you look someone in the eyes and shivers crawl all over your body?" I tore my stare from my nails, to find Marley staring deeply at me.
"I-I don't know. I don't think I've ever felt that other than butterflies in my stomach but never shivers. I don't even think with Caleb." She rolled her eyes at his name and quickly continued to work the pink coated brush.
Caleb. That bastard and what he put her through makes me sick. I recoil from his name and my gut twists itself into an ugly knot.
"Ugh." I sound. "Let's not let the thought of that piece of garbage ruin the night."
Marley soon sat up and that accomplished grin painted itself across her face. I smiled a toothy grin myself and wiggled my toes.
"They look soooo cute!" I spoke, dragging the o out longer than needed, making her chuckle.
