Chapter 3
God, English is so boring. What's even the point of learning the proper way to talk in a language I've already mastered? Exactly, there's no point. Essay's make it even worse.
Mr. Holland makes English even more undeniably worse. He's one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He goes on and on about stupid current events that nobody gives a shit about. And most of the time he starts bagging on Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus and how they are ruining our society. I mean, Miley is odd now, but she's not ruining society.
In all honesty, though, if there is anyone else he hates other than Miley or Justin, it's probably me. But feelings are mutual. I might even hate him more than I hate Collin....and that's saying a lot.
Today, of all days, is a work day in English. I don't have anything to do. Well, I have work, but I don't want to do it right now. I don't want to do it ever. For most of the class it's just a free invitation to talk.
I get out my Chemistry paper, revising the four answers I don't have on the sheet. I just need four answers. "Claire." I tap Claire's shoulder and I don't stop until she responds.
"What do you want?" she asks as she turns around.
Claire bear....
Her beauty has me in a trance. "Can I borrow your paper from Chemistry?" I can't help looking at her lips. I really want to kiss them.
She frowns, but gets out her completed, of course, Chemistry paper. "Oh, so you want to borrow it for cheating?"
I laugh, although it's forced. "It's not cheating, Claire bear," I say. "Just think of it as you generously helping me with a subject that makes for sense whatsoever."
She shakes her head and pushes the paper on my desk. "I like how you trust these answers to be correct."
I peek up at her. "You're always right, Claire bear. I can trust that."
"Would you stop calling me Claire bear?" she asks after a few seconds.
I smirk, looking up at her. "Does it bother you?"
"Yes, as a matter of fact, it does."
I smirk again.
Oh, I am totally going to keep calling her Claire bear. It fits her, anyway.
"Mitchell, Garfield, what's going on over here?" asks Holland. He puts his fat hands on his waist and raises his eyebrows at me. "Don't tell me you're copying Ms. Mitchell's paper?"
Damn, what do I do?
I throw her paper in the air, even though I know it won't go far because it's paper. "I'm not, Holland. I think you need to stop jumping to conclusions." I pick up the paper from the ground and give it back to Claire, how's smiling.
"Then, tell me exactly what you were doing with her paper, if you weren't cheating." He crosses his arms.
"Okay, fine. It's actually a funny story." That really isn't all that funny, but I don't want to go to the office again. "You see, Mr. Holland, Claire bear and I are partners in Chemistry and I didn't know how to spell something. Because of her tiny voice, I couldn't hear her spelling it, so I borrowed her paper to spell it."
That was incredibly fast thinking for someone like me. I normally choke under pressure, but hey, it's believable....I hope.
"And what word were you trying to spell?"
Shit....
"Deliquescence," I answer, although I'm not sure if it's right or not. "It's the substances that absorb water from the atmosphere to form liquid solutions."
