Shots rang through the air as I tripped over my own feet running towards the ship. The air was thick and black with smoke.
My lungs felt as if I had swallowed a bonfire. My mouth tasted of sulfur and ash.
Another round of shots rang through the air, stinging my ears once again.
Oh god, I'm gonna die, I thought.
I fell to the ground writhing in pain and looked up at the sky.
The sky.
What the hell?
I felt a rasp of warm air on my neck reminiscent to that of breath.
Someone was behind me.
"Sam. Get up."
"I can't!" I yelled back at the voice.
A hand grabbed my shoulder as I felt tears sliding down my cheeks.
"Wake up, Sam."
I began to turn towards the voice when my shoulders began to shake.
"SAM WAKE UP!"
I shot up in my bed.
It was a dream. Thank god.
My sister, Anna, stood next to my bed with an annoyed look on her face.
"Mom said its time to get up. You have to go to school," she said, exasperated.
I fell back on my pillow and yawned.
"Sam, have you been crying?" she said as she stuck her nose in my face.
I took the pillow next to me and hit her with it, signifying for her to go away.
"You have to go too, so get your ass out of my room."
She walked out the door, but not without flipping me off.
She for some reason thinks she's cool now that she's in her freshman year of high school. I chuckled to myself as I got up and got ready for school, which basically meant getting dressed and brushing my hair. I have makeup, but that stuff is limited when you live underground on a post apocalyptic planet.
I went through my morning routine then walked to school. School was basically a brick 2 story building.
The whole design of the town was built so that we have one large cavity with a flat bottom to have measly buildings. The only exit from this place was the tunnel that ran next to the enforcer offices. It was constantly guarded by elite enforcers 24/7.
We arrived at school just in time, as usual. Well, not exactly on time. The bell rung just before I got to my english classroom. I knocked on the door, waiting awkwardly outside.
Ms. Burferman opened the door reluctantly. She have a disapproving look behind her thick framed glasses.
"You're late once again, Ms. Harmin."
"Yes ma'am," I said as I brushed passed her and walked to my seat.
She should just get used to the fact that I'll never be the perfect student. Nobody is. Especially for her. Half of the class calls her Ms. Burgerman on "accident".
I sat next to Madison, my long time friend. Also the only other girl here who isn't scared of everyone.
"If you're gonna be late, don't do it in Burgerman's class. One day she's going to rip your head off and use it as a chalkboard eraser," Madison said.
"I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be that effective," I scoffed.
"Did you take the EFE exam yet?" she asked me.
