Star Light

Dee and Shania stared out the apartment complex window, at the stars that seemed to wink back.

Their bags were packed in each of their rooms, ready for them to be put individually into Shan and Dee's cars in the morning, and then in different directions they went.

Shan's room was basically empty, with a few knickknacks here and there, and a desk lamp that gave off a soft glow in the corner.

Tomorrow they were to venture out into the real world in opposite directions of the country.

Shan was accepted into the University of Texas and Dee was off to UW Madison. The only upside about any of this was that Dee would only be a few hours away from Gary Indiana.

"We'll talk every night, right?" Dee asked.

"Of course! And we'll do face time and Snapchat. We'll be fine." Shan smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.

The truth was, she was afraid for what tomorrow would bring. This was an end of an era. There'd be no more late night Michael movies or early morning jam sessions. They'd be hundreds upon hundreds of miles away for four years.

Shan sighed, looking around her room. The spots where her Michael posters used to hang were now barren for the first time in years, as well as her book shelves.

"You think our new roommates will like MJ, too?"

"By the time we're done with them they will." Dee laughed, making Shan do the same. "It'll be fine, Shan." Dee took her hand, smiling softly. "No amount of miles could ever tear us apart. What's 4 years anyways? It's nothin'."

Shan let out a breath. "Yeah, you're right."

"Girls, it's almost time for lights out!" Shan's Father called from somewhere in the apartment.

"One last song?" Shania asked hopefully.

Dee grinned. "Always."

Putting her iPod in between them on the windowsill, Dee pressed play and Man In The Mirror filled Shan's room.

They didn't say much as they closed there eyes and listened to the words, sometimes singing along with all their hearts.

Soon though Shan's Dad appeared in the doorway, smiling sadly. "Time to go girls. You have an early day tomorrow."

He left and Dee and Shania instantly wrapped their arms around each other, holding on tight.

"I'll see ya tomorrow." Dee promised.

"Dido." Shan's voice came out muffled against her friends sweater.

Finally, they let go and unwilling said good night. Shan closed her bedroom door and slipped into her bed, looking around her empty room, praying that what ever the future had in store for them, it would be good.
