Chapter 4

     Fire

I jolted awake as a huge boom rocked the ship. Another boom ripped through the ship and seconds later shards of wood were raining around me. My arms came up to shield myself and I only looked up when all the wood settled. When I looked there was a hole in the brig big enough for me to fit through.

thank you god! Thank you thank you thank you! I thought as I climbed through the hole suddenly extremely happy that I was starving. Then I noticed the giant ship looming over my prison. My eyes widened as the giant ship started to over take the smaller one. Glancing down I noticed the water a few feet below me and decided to take the chance of sharks when I jumped in. I gasped when I came up, and then I swam to the opposite side of my captor's ship.

It was then I noticed the name on the side of the ship it was the Bloody Mary. I snapped out of it and climbed up the side. I could hear pistols and guns going off and I could feel the boat rock as I climbed faster. My head peeked over the railing and no one noticed too focused on the enemy ship. The Jolly Roger on the other ship told me the other ship was also full of pirates that would find me and take me along with the rest of the loot the pirates must have taken from town.

The size of the other ship made me think that the crew was much bigger which meant more men to use me in the end. That was the moment that I risked and saved my life. I jumped over the railing making sure I stayed hidden. The captain was commanding his ship which meant the captain's cabin must be empty. Without second thoughts I snuck in and looted the room for trousers and a shirt. Once I found them I stripped and put them on. The shirt was huge on me so it hung over my shoulder and I had to tighten the drawstring of the trousers immensely but they were still baggy on me. Then I found a pistol under the bed and stuffed it into the back of my pants with the shirt covering it. I finished by stuffing my hair into a giant hat with a feather in it.

The battle was nearly over when I finally made it out of the cabin. I started shooting men on the other deck making sure to save a few shots just in case and then men started swinging onto the Bloody Mary and fighting sword on sword. Frantically I searched for a sword, but then I heard our surrender.

"Cease fire!" I quickly put my pistol away and suddenly a sword was put to my neck and as I looked around I noticed so did everyone else.

A deep chuckling emanated from some unknown man because I had my head down to hide my face. At least I was until the wind picked up and my hat blew off of my head and my wet hair dropped onto my back and I heard a collective gasp. My eyes widened in fear as the man threatening my life started to chuckle.

"Captain! I think I found something!" The man said. He dropped his sword and grabbed my arm. I was lead across the deck back to the captain's cabin where a group of enemies had gathered. A man stepped forward scrutinizing me. I guessed he was the captain.

He was significantly better groomed than the captain of the Bloody Mary. "Well how did you get here milady." I hated to admit it but I took a liking to this man at that line, but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. "What is your name, and how did you get on this ship?"

"I don't believe that's any of your business." I gritted out. The man just chuckled again.

"Well you're feisty, but if I were you I would answer the man in control of your life." With that the man gripping my arm clenched his fist around my arm and put the sword across my throat.

"Don't touch her!" A familiar voice yelled and I heard shuffling. I tried to turn my head but the sword cut into my throat deeper and I gave up. Even with out looking I could tell it was Ryan.

"This is the ship that took down a British vessel just days ago is it not?" The captain asked me.

"How should I know I've only been here for a day." I asked angrily.

The captain nodded to the man behind me and the sword was pulled away. I reached behind me and pulled the pistol from my trousers. First there was quiet and then a man behind me groaned and I smirked. Soon the battle started again. "Lucky for me your men would do anything to protect you. Even drop their sword against an enemy to come to your rescue."

"Smart, but you just pulled a pistol on someone who could disarm you." In a flash I was standing with my back against the captain's chest and no gun in my hand. "Like so." Then the captain picked me up so one arm was under my back and the other was under my knees.

"Ah! What are you doing! Let go of me!" I squealed.

"I don't think so! You're coming with me." Then the captain started running from the conflict.

"No!" I screamed as loudly as I could and then I was dropped on my back and my breath left me. As I struggled to breath I watched Ryan hold his sword to the captain's throat.

"Stop!" The captain yelled, and his men paused and then noticed and one by one started to drop their swords.

Bloody Mary's captain then appeared and patted Ryan on the back. "Good work son. Put their crew in the brig men and sink the bloody ship!" He yelled. Some other man grabbed the enemy captain and dragged him off. Ryan rushed over to me and pulled me to him.

"Are you ok." He whispered in my ear. I nodded in shock.

"Take her too Ryan." My captor said. I looked up at his sneer and frowned.

"I saved your ship!" I yelled standing up. "Why should I go back in there."

"You also stole my clothes and put my crew in danger. The first I don't mind but the second puts you in a cage. Whether my ship is saved our not. Ryan, put her in the brig now!" Then he walked away to watch the giant ship sink.

Ryan gently grabbed my arm and turned me to face him. "I'm sorry." He whispered. Then I tensed when he pulled me in for a hug. After a while he pulled away and led my back to the brig that was now full of enemy men. Somehow the hole I had squeezed through earlier was repaired and my own personal cell was waiting for me. He put me in and closed the cell. Looking around he notices the wreckage from the blast and then stares at me. "Are you ok?" He asked yet again.

"Yes, I'm fine." I insisted. He nodded and then walked away.

"So what is a pretty thing like you doing in here?" I looked over to see the enemy captain in the cage next to mine.

"Snatched up at the Boston harbor a day or two ago. Did you really think I was here willingly?" I explained thinking he wasn't a threat to me anymore.

"Then why didn't you want to come to our ship?" He asked actually confused.

"I figured your ship had more men to... cater to. If you know what I mean." I answered. Slowly the captain started nodding. "I thought captain's were supposed to go down with their ship." I added.

"He did. I'm merely the first mate. I was put in charge. Look where that got him. Outsmarted by a girl." He looked off into space thinking. "Would you really have pulled the trigger?"

"If you had a gun I would answer you, but alas we're both trapped here...weaponless." I sounded tough but deep down I knew I wouldn't have, couldn't have, shot the man who I was now talking to as if we'd known each other forever.

"The name's Luke." He said. I stared at him warily before sealing our friendship.

     "Jenna."

So I have now given Jenna a friend and please tell me if you like the chapter. If you were reading the original version of this book this scene will be familiar except I changed it around a bit so I could set it up for... gah I almost told you my plans! Anyway hope you enjoyed!!!! (if anyone can guess please put it in the comments I would love to see how many people can figure out why I put Luke in.)
