Chapter 6
Sea Storm
I woke up to a voice calling my name. I was shivering madly. My eyes popped open and I slowly sat up. The floor beneath me was wet and the pitter patter of rain explained why. "Jenna!" I groggily looked over at the voice calling my name. Luke was looking at me worried through the bars. "Get over here girl before you freeze to death!" He yelled.
My body was shivering harshly, but when I tried to move little needles poked into my skin. "I can't move." I whispered. I couldn't get my voice any louder.
"Jenna! Come on!" Luke yelled. He obviously didn't hear me. I kept struggling to move my body and miraculously turned over onto my stomach. I groaned as I got my arms and legs beneath me and pushed myself up. "That's a girl Jenna! Hurry!" I turned towards Luke's voice and started crawling towards him. The ship rocked, and I swayed. My progress was slow, but somehow I ended up in Luke's arms with his coat around my cold shoulders. I closed my eyes again to sleep, but Luke shook me. "Don't sleep Jenna! Stay awake!"
"But I'm so tired." I grumbled. There was more screaming, but I couldn't understand what anybody was saying. Suddenly I felt strong arms around me, and heat radiated off of the hard object that engulfed me.
"You have to stay awake Jenna. Please just stay awake for me." I soothing voice whispered in my ear.
"Ryan." I whispered. His hold on me tightened. "I'm tired."
"No! Jenna! Ok, ok I'm going to tell you a story, but you have to stay awake if I'm going to tell it. Do you want to hear it?" I nodded into his firm chest. "Answer me Jenna. With words."
"Yes I want to hear it." I muttered.
"Ok, not to long ago a little boy was walking around the streets of Boston searching for his good for nothing father. In the distance he started to hear screaming, and he could tell someone was in trouble. He ran as fast as he could toward a the screaming voice and came to an ally where his father was hitting a little girl who looked filthy and like she had seen better days. Seeing what his father was doing to the girl the little boy stepped in and screamed at his father. After giving the little boy a good shiner the father left the ally leaving the little girl and little boy alone. The little boy quickly ran to the girl and discovered there were tears running down her face. He asked if she was ok. He asked where she was hurt. Then he asked what her name was." All through the story I had pictured it in my mind, and then Ryan stopped.
"What was her name?" I asked staring up at Ryan's thoughtful face. His hand came up to cup my cheek and his thumb stroked back and forth.
"I'll tell you the rest another time ok, my sweet Jenna?" He whispered that last part, and I was still too half asleep to question it or be suspicious of it.
"Get your bloody hands off her you scoundrel!" Luke yelled from the other side of the bars.
"I will not let her freeze!" Ryan yelled back. "And who are you to call me a scoundrel when you yourself are no better than me!" I felt the ground leave me as Ryan lifted my body off of the wet floor. Luke's jacket came with me.
"Where the Hell do you think you're taking her?" Luke asked with outrage in his voice.
"I'm going to warm her up! Now stop being selfish and let me help her! God knows I've done more for her than you!" Without another word Ryan took me from the brig and out onto the deck where the storm was raging, but he held me protectively in his arms so I wouldn't get even more wet. The other crew members were too occupied with keeping the ship afloat to notice Ryan's hurried retreat to the captain's cabin with me in his arms.
Realization started to come back as we neared the fancy door. "Ryan, what are you doing. He'll kill you if you put me in there!" I told him more worried for his safety than my own.
"Then let him. I won't let you freeze to death down in that dirty Shit hole." We were through the door, and Ryan had me on the bed and underneath the covers in no time. The sky growled it's anger at whoever had pissed it off this time and a sudden flash showed Ryan's face to me for a brief moment. He was staring intently at me. There were water droplets hanging from his soaked clothes and hair.
"What will he do to me?" I whispered.
"I will do whatever I can to protect you." He whispered back. "Whatever it takes." It stunned me how much Ryan cared for me. We were still complete strangers and yet he was so...protective. It was as if he had met me long ago and decided he would protect me from then on. The sky flashed, and Ryan was right above me. It cracked and then flashed again, and Ryan's lips met mine.
His lips were soft and gentle, and he was slow and kind. His kisses were intoxicating. They made me relax even though I was in his captain's bed, and said captain would probably kill me if he found me here. Ryan's lips carressed mine softly as if he was afraid he would startle me. I slowly kissed him back. His hand traveled to my cheek so he could pull me closer. The sound of the storm dissipated in my mind as I drowned in Ryan's warmth. His teeth gently pulled at my bottom lip, and he pulled away leaving me light headed and breathless.
"I'll keep a watch out, but I don't think anyone will come in during the storm. Go to sleep, and I'll come and get you when it's over." He whispered. I averted my eyes in embarrassment.
"Ok." I whispered. Ryan ran his hand down my cheek before he left making me shiver. Then he was gone, and the confusion took over.
