If you can’t take a little swearing, then don’t read this.

He sat across the room, watching the girl dance. Smooth with coordinated movements, she hypnotized him. People whispered comments about how strange he was, sitting in a corner, all alone, staring into empty space. He ignored the whispers and insults and continued to watch only her. Occasionally, his friends asked him to join them, but he shook his head and continued to watch her dance. He watched as her friends joined her, moving in time with the music, singing all the lyrics. They twirled around, never staying in the same place for too long. She noticed him watching, but ignored him and continued to move rhythmically to the music. Eventually, she gets lost in the loud echoing beat of the speakers, intoxicated with the music. Boys walk up to her, hoping to dance, but she just giggles and walks away. Her shoes lay abandoned on the side of the room, left to collect dust a few hours ago when the dance started. The music shifts into a slow dance, and the girl sits out to make way for the couples on the dance floor. He slowly makes his way across the room until he is standing in front of her. She looks up, her crystal blue eyes meeting his.

"It could have been different." He says, the beat still thumping in the background.

"Yeah," she says slowly, "it could have been, Jack." They both stare silently into each other's eyes.

"But," she says softly before he walked away, barely audible above the music, "it's not."

She gets up and walks away, but he stays standing, unable to tear his eyes away from the figure slowly walking off into the distance
