"I had a play showing. It was Oliver. I played Nancy and desperately wanted my parents to see it. It was extremely difficult getting the part. There were a lot of people who tried out for her. I was extremely proud of the work I did for the musical. My parents never went to one of my musicals or plays. But this one was different! I had the best part! I was the star! I took the spotlight! I had the best part!" Miss Cochen said with unexpected enthusiasm. Her eyes beamed with pride and happiness. She sat there, looking like the voice in her head was telling her how terrific she was. After an awkward silence, she stated with sudden grimness,"But my father didn't think so. He's never proud. No matter how hard I try he's always disappointed in me. It's because he wanted a boy. It's not my fault I'm not a boy. I came to their home and my father was in the living room, reading the political section of the newspaper I assume because that's the section he usually reads. I guess my father was expecting me to tell him that I got married or something. I can say it is slightly my fault because I said,' I have big news, father,' but he misinterpreted it. He's always expecting me to get married anyway.

I explained I was starring in a musical and he grew furious. I don't understand why he was so angry. All I did was explain that I'm part of a musical. I never said anything offensive. I only said how exciting it is that his own daughter is the star of the performance.

He yelled at me and told me that I was a good for nothing show girl and I yelled back that I wasn't and that I fought hard to be who I am currently to showbiz. I told him if he had listened to me while I was being tormented in school, I might be having a different career.

Miss Marlett seemed torn apart and left the room. I think she understood that she didn't have anything to do with it so it would be rude to stay. Well it would have been rude and she's so darn lucky she did leave! If she didn't I would have been furious with her and, and- I would have been furious!" Alice went back to her normal self after a dramatic pause.

"Well, father and I tossed rude remarks at each other. He told me he hopes I mess up and ruin the entire musical. I told him I hoped he would loose his business and lives on the streets. I was just sick of him. He's ruined me! He's ruined everything! I can't take it anymore! He's a good for nothing, snobby, crooked, mean person!" Miss Cochen cried as she slammed her hands on the table, her eyes bloodshot, her face pale. The officer shuffled in his seat when he noticed Miss Cochen's dark circles under her eyes.

"What next?"

"How should I know! I wish my father would leave me alone! I'm tired of the old hoot! I wish he'd just go die or something!" Miss Cochen screamed. "Yeah...that's a good idea. He should just die. I like the sound of that..."she mumbled as she glared at the table and a grin spread across her face.

"Miss Cochen, your father was murdered and that's why you're here."

Her smile vanished as she looked up from the table and stared at the officer," He's dead?" Miss Cochen asked, in a surprised, quiet tone, "That's strange. That's really strange. I saw him last week. Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Miss Cochen's cheeks grew slightly pink as she thought hard. "Someone beat me to it! How- how could they? How dare they? That was going to be my moment! My turn! Why do people always take my spot light away from me! That would have been my moment! My moment to shine! I always am about to step into the limelight when something happens and I step into darkness instead! Don't you understand? I had it planned! I had it figured out!" She shrieked as she stood up, tears filling her bloodshot eyes," It was ingenious! It was beautiful! I knew what had to be done and I would of done it flawlessly! I was-"

"Stop yelling!" The officer ordered, almost screaming to match Miss Cochen's pitch. He didn't know how else to react to Miss Cochen's sudden fit of rage.
