Breathless, I suggested softly to Jake a few places where we could take refuge. We already ran for a while, trying to escape the rebels. We haven't the time to think because of the whole crowd so; our choice fell on the house of Jake. We rushed to our destination trying to escape the gunfire and several people who were blocking the way. Finally, with relief, we saw the small hut that served as shelter for my best friend. Only our hands tied reassured us through all this madness. Too eager to get his keys, Jake smashed door kicked and dragged me into his room. It consisted of a single bed, large furniture and a small lamp.
"But what are we doing in your room? There is no place to hide!" I exclaimed me furiously.
"Wait." He replied.
He quickly moved the furniture that concealed a small door. He crafted it with a jerk. Hurried footsteps coming towards us were heard.
"Come quickly in" He said.
I had to stoop to get through the door. Believing that Jake followed me, I relaxed for a moment. Yet when the door closed, I couldn't see my best friend anymore.
"Jake! Where are you? "
In response, he knocked on the door and I heard him ask me to shut up. Shocked, I immediately shut me up, listening to their conversation.
"Jake Cartel?" Said a man.
"Yes?" He replied anxious.
"Follow us."
No. Not a rebel. This couldn't be a rebel. I walked to the back of the small room and sat in a corner, folding my legs against myself. Living in District 2, we were the first informed of tensions that formed within districts because we were the closest allies of the Capitol. Until then, he had been able to manage the population of Panem. However, there were two years everything had degenerated. Wars for freedom had begun. Now, we did everything to stay alive.
For some time, the rebel attacks were more frequent in District 2 because we were with the Capitol. Every week, there were new bombings, new dead peoples and especially, less hope. At the beginning, people were motivated, but after a few weeks, they lost confidence. Despite the tactics of the rebels, the Capitol had always more than one trick up his sleeve. Suddenly, something pulled me out of my thoughts. It was a deep voice that echoed around the small room.
"Ladies and gentlemen, here's Bitarve. In recent weeks, we have experienced difficult times but do not worry. We regained control and everything will be fine. I invite you to join your respective districts and to be attentive to the messages that announce the next application of our new rules. And do not forget, despite all attempts, you can never rule us. "
Hesitantly, I opened the back door and I emerged from the room again Jake. Jake ... I was hoping he was okay. However, we had win the war! What could happen wrong? A thin relief enveloped me not only because we won, but because I did not hear a scream. I went eagerly to the outside. The air was difficult to breathe and we hardly see anything, only shadows on the ground. Corpses, I told myself. I walked in trying to avoid looking at their face, it would have disgusted me. Suddenly, for discontent, I stumbled on one of them and spread me my whole body on the ground next to the lifeless body. His blonde hair reminded me of something, specifically someone. I approached and let out a cry.
"JAKE!"
But he said nothing. His eyes were closed and he was floating in a pool of blood, surely his. I slapped him, to see if he was awake and took his pulse: his heart stopped beating. It was like if someone had ripped off a part of me. I began to cry folding me over him. I was the only person alive through all these bodies. I realized then that men who were looking for Jake earlier were none other than peacekeepers. They had surely obliged to fight. Jake, he protected me by hiding me. And he ... Just thinking about it made me sick, and my sobs grew. I raised my head and the only thing I saw was the logo of the Capitol. All this was their fault. While I was still curled up against the body of my best friend, crying, I promised myself one thing: revenge.
