Chapter 6 :
"Tributes ready, tributes ready." A speaker declared. I quickly stepped forward to join the cart that was meant for us, Collins and me. I hadn't speak to him since the accident. Didn't matter.
The last two hours were filled with pain. Every bristle had been removed from its follicle and each hair was put in its place. If they weren't tamed, well, they cut! Simple as that. I was lucky, mine were well behaved, but I saw a little girl with a half-shaved head. Sad. But funny. I let a small laugh.
"What is so funny, dear?" My stylist said. She proved being very nice, and her outfits were not so bad. For example, at this moment, I wore a golden dress that came to my knees, and that was supposed to reproduce our District. Masonry. I wondered what could be beautiful in a mason' suit, but Saphir succeed to make me look nice. Plus, the sun reflected on my dress and it formed shadows on my face, which made me look dangerous and impassive. I loved it. Simple, but effective.
In my hair, golden dust was spread. It was amazing! Due to my naturally dark hair, I could now have some reflections brown caramel. They were tied in a bun where some curled strand came out. I was absolutly fabulous! My stylist was more talented than the others. I saw in the distance the District 12, mines. They were naked with a black powder everywhere. I laughed louder.
"Sorry, Saphir, it's just that .. I feel so happy to wear this gorgeous outfit!" I wouldn't openly mock the work of her possible friends.
"Oh, then I'm glad you like it." She said, gently. What surprised me at first about her was the color of her skin, from a pale blue to a darker one. Then her hair, blond pratically yellow, made me swallow a laugh. She wore a blue lipstick and some spirals around her eyes, no needs to tell you what color they were.
"Thank you, Saphir." I uttered.
"You're welcome, sweetheart. Come on your cart and put on your best smile!" She replied cheerfully. She was kind, on the other hand. Which facilitated my task, I did not have to force myself to play the friendly. But after all, I was going to do it at least once, because the arena will be filled with goods-for-nothing. It will be necessary that I make some allies with a few of them if I didn't want to die in the first few seconds.
Without taking a look at my partner, Collins, I went on the cart and prepared myself for the audience. He constantly tried to speak to me, but I said nothing. Then I remembered he was probably strong, so I would need him on my side. I sighed and gave him my biggest smile.
"Sorry Collins, I'm just stressed about everything. Actually, who would not?" I looked and fluttered my long fake eyelashes. Pathetic, but good.
"Yeah, I am rea.." He didn't have the time to finish his sentence because the cart moved forward. I sighed in relief. Did I am angry against him? Obviously. But why? I had no idea.
We made our entrance. The crowd applauded us, with cheerfulness. I waved my hand and smiled. Some sent me kisses and other flowers. Perfect. I could add them to my list of potential sponsors.
The sponsors. The only ones who can save you if you're burnt out, by sending something to help you. These things still cost money. Even the smallest water bottle or package of dried fruit could cost three times my house. But first, for having these, you had to look attractive, nice... in short, you had to be his or her favorite. The opening ceremony and the interviews were just for that. To show your personality.
Also, there was a training period, lasting about two weeks. And at the end, there was a private session. You must prove that you're not a sissy and you're able to defend yourself. How it was complicated!
We made a last lap. My arms ached as I had waved to my admirers. Many roses were on the ground, of all colors. I grabbed one, which was destined to me, sniffed it, and mouthed a 'thank you' at the boy who sent it to me. Then I fluttered my fake eyelashes and sent a kiss.
Please, let him be rich. I thought. He gave me a wink and my smile stretched.
Another one.
