Chapter 9

I woke up and the other side of the bed is empty. She was probably doing her job. Layla's situation was breaking my heart, why was she here at such a young age? Why couldn't she speak? Why was life so unfair for her.

Someone knocked at my door, I thought it was her, but was soon disappointed because it was only Aubrine asking me to dress with the training clothes and after come for breakfast. I closed the door and took the clothes on my drawer, I guessed it was those one. A black leggings and a shirt in the same colour. The number two was writed on the shirt's back. Yeah, it was that.

I slipped them on and got out of my room. Joy, the sun was beating full. Large windows let through a sweet, warm yellow light in the dining room. This gave me a smile. At least it was not a day with boring and gray rain. I still where Layla was she asked, but my question was immediately forgotten in the sight of the imense feast waiting for us.

"Good morning, dear!" Aubrine squealed, a big smile accrossing her face. I smiled back before sitting on an empty chair. I took a plate and served me some fruit and a kind of pink soup absolutely delicious. I also used a bowl and filled it with this brown liquid simply exquisite.

"It's hot chocolate, dear." Aubrine inquired.

"Chocolate?.. Mhmm!" I had heard of that a thousands of times, without having tasted. It was a shame that I discovered this new taste only now.

"Hey." A voice that I knew well said.

I turned and didn'f hide my hate towards him. "Hi. Collins." I said, rudely. He stepped forward and sat, with my displeasure, at my side. I was so mad at him. I didn't know he could be like that. I got up and went away without a word.

"Be ready in 20 minutes dear!" Aubrine shouted.

"Sure, i'll be." I muttered. I hated them. I hated them all.

I decided to walk around the apartment without a fixed goal. But deep down, I knew it was to find my Layla. After a while, I became annoyed, so I stopped. Anyway, it was time to get down for the training session. Layla must be preparing dinner. I walked to the elevator and immediatly became careful. I didn't want to see Collins and / or Aubrine.

Perfect, I saw none of them. I pressed the button and waited. When the door opened, someone was already there. A white suit, gray hair.

Oh, a peacekeeper. Great.

I didn't look at him and got into the elevator. There was plenty of buttons and I didn't know which to press.

"Um, excuse me, where's the training center?" I asked.

"Oh, Miss Johnson. Lovely to see you again." He said, without looking at me or answer to my question.

"Good, but how- wait what?" I turned to face him and immediately recognized his piercing eyes. "Joy. You again."

"Yes, miss. I see that you volountered like I told you to do." He said, pressing a button. The doors closed but the elevator didn't move.

"Yes I did. Otherwise I wouldn't be there huh? Now, I have to train. So press the button and all will be okay."

"Before, we should talk a little."

"But i'll be late!"

"If i'm with you, it'll be okay. I'm a peacekeeper, right?"

"And..? Maybe if I was with Bitarve it would be okay. Not with you, duh?"

"First, it's Mr. Bitarve, and second, i'm his closer assistant. I'm sure he will understand. Anyway, I was here to talk about the little girl."

I froze. "The little girl..?"

"The one you may known as Layla."

"I don't know what you are talking about."

"Oh, yes you know honey. What you don't know is that she's closer to you than you think."

"Closer to me..?"

"I think it's better that she explains that to you than me. Oh wait, yes. She's an avox, she can't talk. It's really funny huh?"

I did not let him get a word in, I slapped the peacekeeper so strong that a red mark appeared. He instantly reacted by punching me back and pressed me against the wall. We looked like a cat and a dog fighting together. Whatever. He blew his breath in my face and continued.

"You don't want to offend your beautiful little Jake, right?" The heard of his name made me shudder.

"What do you mean by that?" I asked, confused.

"Oh, he did not tell you? That's a shame." I tried to free myself from his grip and I finally managed to move away from him. I was ready to press the help button, but something held me to not do it.

"Go ahead. It doesn't bother me. But who will live in doubt now? Well, if you survive." He said, jokingly. But, I'm not laughing at all.

"Come on, tell me."

"Um .. I can be nice and tell you, but there is a little problem .."

"Which one?"

"I'm not nice."

With that, he pressed a button, got out of the elevator and let me there, alone. I was about to press another one, because I didn't trust him, when the door suddenly opened, letting a boy walking in, panicked.
