It's week three and we are going to learn something tomorrow they say. We don't know what yet, but the place is so big that we toured it for the first week. The other weeks we went hiking or swimming in the lake nearby. We didn't know what the heck was going on. Even the teachers who brought us here were confused. Every other night I would go to the balcony and meet Christine there. We would chat about our day and watch the night go by. Last night she gave me a hug before she left for bed. I think we are going to be boyfriend and girlfriend pretty soon. I would like that.
Today is the day that we learn something. Good, I'd rather my brain not melt. I wander around the place during free-time and catch two girls walking down the primary corridor. Christine is looking at the paintings on the wall. Staring, as if looking back in time. One of the girls walks near Christine and pushes her. Knocking her off her feet.
"HEY!" I yell at the girls. They look back at me and snicker.
"Why are you crushin on a country girl? She doesn't belong out here. And she doesn't deserve you." They say. I run down the hall trying to catch them and force them to apologize. They run out of the hall just out of my reach. I stop and return to Christine who is now sitting on the floor with her head buried in her knees. I sit next to her and put my arm around her. She sniffles and says they're right. I reassure her that we are no different to any other person. She sits and collects herself and we go and look at more art. I notice a painting that looks to be Christopher Columbus crossing the sea. Then something catches my eye.
A bright, neon yellow arrow in the bottom right of the painting. Pointing down. I 'point' it out (ha ha ha... ok I'll stop) to Christine. She seems puzzled and notices something. She pushes down a snake in the frame and the wall cracks open. A secret door. Christine and I look at each other. I look down the hall to make sure the coast is clear.
"We should leave it." I say. But Christine was already inside the room. I regret my actions and enter the room. The room is like another huge corridor that leads to one door. A big door. Almost as big as the front doors. Christine gives it a pull and it slowly opens. We enter the doorway and see a long spiral stairwell. We look at each other and nod in agreement. We start to walk up the steps.
After about a few steps. I hear a loud creak. Then Christine's right foot disappeared into the step. I grabbed her and pulled her back up from falling. Her right shoe clearly told us that these stairs are all that keep us from life and death. We continue to climb the rest of the stairs in a safe manner and approach another door. This time it's smaller. About the size of the door of the dorms. I give it a pull. It doesn't budge. We both pull. I push and nothing happens. I ram the door. A creak was made, but not enough. So Christine and I both prepare to ram it.
"Three, two, one!" She says. We both ram it and the door gives way. We land on the cold, brick floor. We lay there for a few seconds and then start to laugh. We chuckled and giggled until our faces turned bright red. Then we get up, brush the dust off of us and get a view of our surroundings.
The place is mostly brick and wood. Spruce as Christine points out. We see that the Vortex is in the center of the room. We find out that we are directly above the main hall. We try to hear above the hum of the vortex. We hear voices. The meeting had begun.
"Crap." we both say. We don't care though. This place is amazing. We start rummaging through the different crates and boxes in the attic and find some cool things. I find an old top hat, a bowtie and an old clock. Christine finds an old bonnet, a skirt, and an old doll. Just as we are about to leave, I notice something glowing in the corner of the room. The crate is completely closed but something in the crate still manages to shine through. I walk over to it and try to open it. I beckon for Christine and we both pry the top off. We look inside the crate to find something weird. An orb with something encased in it. It glows an orange/golden color and feels surprisingly warm to the touch.
"We should just leave that there and get out of here." whispers Christine. I don't want to leave something this awesome, so I secretly take it. We walk past the vortex and begins to slightly pull on us. The bonnet is ripped out of Christine's hand and is swallowed by the vortex through the small window open in the glass. Then the vortex starts to have blue streaks swirling in it. My eye then glances through the small gap between the vortex and the wall that the master instructor notices and sends three big guards. I grab Christine and say "we have to go." We open the door and start to head down the stairs. But as we go down a few stairs, we hear them approaching us fast from the other direction. We turn around and slam the door shut. We then step back close to the vortex. I turn to Christine.
"We're screwed." I say. Suddenly the door bursts open and I drop the orb. Flinching, awaiting to hear the orb shatter. It surprisingly doesn't shatter. I turn to see it be swallowed by the vortex. Then something weird happens. Something that would change everything.
