The night was silent once more. Just like all the other times. But this was different. For one thing, he didn't have his mate living in his house. Now, she was upstairs, possibly sleeping, getting comfortable in a bed that had his monster growling at him.
The lycan within him wanted to invade her privacy—her space for a chance to... to what? He didn't know. His instincts pulled him apart while he tried to push through the illogical mess that the bond was creating for him.
She had seemed unaffected by it.
The bond.
It bothered him to no end. He'd heard of those finding that they were bonded with someone who was not the same as them but the bond remained to be there. Their significant others could feel it between the two of them, essentially helping along the completion of two people.
Maybe he should be glad of it. There were lesser distractions if the one person that knew their enemy wasn't distracted. Clearly, it was working out better for her.
"Can't sleep, huh?"
His eyes moved towards Gemma. He hadn't heard her come to the kitchen which was a sign that he had been too distracted by his thoughts to realize that if it were an enemy, he would have died already.
His Gamma doesn't bother to take a cup and pour herself whatever liquid there was in the fridge like he did. She sat right in front of him at the kitchen island, eyes on him while he took a sip of the orange juice he mistakenly got.
He had been reaching for apple juice.
He hated orange juice.
"Your mate is... something."
She was. While Gemma sipped straight from the carton, he just continued drinking juice. They both sat in silence, not speaking to one another but keeping each other company.
Then, his Gamma broke it. "Do you think she likes you?"
The answer to that was probably not but he went with, "I don't know."
A hand on his made her look down on it, accepting the supporting gesture that she was giving. The comfort alone was appreciated by him. They had all been friends since they were kids—him, Gemma, and Torin—and grew up in the same pack.
The same pack that got burned down by Joseph Victor's cruelty.
They had built everything from the ground up, trying to make sure that they wouldn't ever fail in rising from the ashes once again and now, they were here. They were finally preparing for a war he didn't have many hopes of winning until her. With her, this would give them leverage because she knew more about the monster than they did.
A quick breeze stopped them short, glancing up towards the familiar smell of earth. The dark eyes that landed on both of them were with a smile and Elias wondered how a cold woman could raise someone who looked to be as easy going as the vampire in front of him.
And were they of blood?
The vampire, Sebastien as she called him, glanced at the conjoined hands of him and his gamma, prompting him to release them. But it seemed that he thought wrong of it because the smile on Sebastien's face faltered and changed into a frown.
"Don't mind me," he rose two hands up in the air, prompting his innocence. "I was just looking for food."
"We don't have blood for people like you," Gemma answered, her tone warping in some hostility that Elias hadn't expected.
The vampire nodded, not even bothered by her at all. He supposed that someone who was raised by the Blood Hunter wouldn't get affected by much. "I figured. I was hoping for some snacks that you guys might have. Fruit or anything unhealthy."
Elias nodded at the cupboard by his left. "Get some there."
Sebastien grinned, putting two thumbs up as a response and then walked over to the board and got some salt and vinegar chips. "Awesome. I missed these."
Then he turned back to them. "Thanks." Elias nodded to him. He then waved at him and his Gamma. "By the way, if you guys are together, ma will lose her shit and tell me it's stupid her to be here and that she was right. I don't think you've noticed but we hate being proven wrong."
The lycan's brows furrowed. "We're not together. She's my sister."
Even if he didn't consider her as his sister, he was a lycan. He and all the others believed in being faithful to their mate.
"Huh," the brown-haired vampire raised his brow at them. "Sure. Thanks for the snacks."
Then he went and Elias finished the sour tasting orange juice and left.
