To say Hana had been silent since the news wouldn't be an exaggeration. Her brown eyes are clouded over- holding a sorrow not even I can keep myself to look at. The music in the car in a low mumble, making the space seem even more empty and alone.
Her hands clutch onto the steering wheel, her knuckles white with the strength behind them. Her breathing shakes and her chest wavers with them. The drive stays silent like this as she drives to wherever she desires. I no longer mention going to the pizza place or the dress shop. I watch silently as she parks at the park we had spent with dad in what seemed like years before.
"Will you walk with me?" Her voice is small, holding no emotion. It's empty and broken, the small crack at the end of her sentence causing something to crack within me as well.
"Of course." I say and unbuckle my seatbelt before slowly getting out of the car. My legs are weightless as I walk on the hard black top, only stopping when I realize Hana hasn't even moved from the drivers seat. I let out a long sigh and begin my way to her, every step rising my anticipation. The door opens with a sad click and I squat down beside her, my hands warping around her waist.
We say nothing, no words being able to show what we feel or being able to break the cold barrier around Hana's mind. When she doesn't budge but simply stares forward to the little playground that sets away from the lake. I bite my lip before sliding my hand under her legs and wrapping one arm around her back. I lift her out of the car, a small squeak leaving her as I do so. I close the car door with my foot and begin to walk us to the playground.
I pause at the bench but just keep walking, noticing how her muscles become looser with every foot step I take. "Do you want to talk?"
It takes her a while to respond, her answer coming out small and quiet when she finally does." I just need silence and to think right now."
"Okay." I say and keep walking, swaying slightly with every small step and begin to take notice in every small little thing. Like how the leaves will twirl in a tunnel with every blow of wind. How the playground holds many different names of rebellious children with markers and how trees hold engravings done by couples.
I walk eight laps around the playground and to the docks before Hana clears her throats and looks up sadly at me." I don't want to be a downer but is it fine if I just go home? To take in this news."
"Of course Hana." I tell her and begin to walk back to the car." I'll drive." I tell her, not wanting her to have to drive in her emotional state. She just nods slowly and slumps into the seat when I sit her down. I frown before grabbing my phone and texting Xavier.
Do you think you can pick me up at Hana's house?
Yeah, what's her address?
I quickly type it in before sliding into the drivers seat and putting my seat belt on." I do believe that this is my first time behind the wheel after my accident... I think."
"Makes me feel very secure." She mumbles and I crack a smile before starting the car and checking behind me before backing up and making a J, to get out of the parking lot.
The car ride is silent once more but isn't as broken as it had been. Hana will glance to a different spot to stare at every couple of minutes and her breathing has calmed down. But I still feel guilty when we pull into the parking space of her house. I watch as she slowly gets out of the passenger seat and I clear my throat before handing her the car keys and getting out of the car." Call me whenever Hana. Whenever you are ready to talk."
