"Probably, yeah."
Alex ran her fingers through Maggie's hair and pulled her face in with both hands for another kiss. The tension in Maggie's muscles melted away as she gripped Alex's elbow, pulling them closer together; Maggie slipped her right arm around Alex's waist, sliding down and holding her thin frame with an open palm. Her other hand firmly grasped Alex's shoulder blade, embracing as much of her as she could hold and eliminating what little space remained between them. Alex gently broke the kiss and rested her arms on either side of Maggie's neck, her wrists limp and fingers dangling. They stayed like this for a few seconds: foreheads pressed together, both smiling, while Alex twirled a lock of hair between her fingertips. She started to turn back to the pizza and open beers on the counter, but Maggie interlocked her fingers around Alex's back, wanting to stay in that moment a little while longer.
"The pizza's getting co-"
"I don't care," Maggie interrupted wistfully, inciting a small laugh from Alex. She held Maggie's cheek in one hand and kissed her sweetly until Maggie loosened her grip. Alex ran her thumb along Maggie's jaw as she pulled away and grabbed a bottle, passing one to Maggie before reaching for and taking a sip of her own. She sat down and pulled a chair out for Maggie to do the same; they enjoyed their first few bites in silence, Maggie trying unsuccessfully to suppress her elation. The deep creases at the sides of her lips gave her away.
"You must really like pizza, huh," Alex questioned, amused by Maggie's timid joy.
"Shut up, Danvers." She kept her eyes down and could still feel Alex's lightheartedly teasing gaze. She looked up to meet it, indignant at first, and was shocked by its warm intensity; Alex's big brown eyes glistened in the low light, and Maggie took a sharp breath. She'd felt the urge to kiss her for weeks, and now that she finally had, it only grew stronger. Alex was chewing and Maggie held soft eye contact, savouring the gentle pressure of Alex's right knee on the inside of Maggie's left. They were together, connected and content, and that was entirely enough.
"You smell really good," Maggie, in a burst of uncharacteristic candor, admitted under her breath, "Seriously. I didn't notice before."
"Really? What do I smell like?"
"I don't know, it's kind of... earthy? Like trees, or dead grass, or something. Mixed with those overpriced candles with arbitrary titles," Maggie ponders aloud, "Oh, and a little bit like dryer sheets."
Alex raised her right eyebrow, confused and entertained by this radically specific scent profile. To her, Maggie just smelled like comfort.
"Fascinating analysis, Sawyer." Alex's remark made Maggie blush, showing a softness she guarded well and which was new to Alex. They returned to comfortable silence.
"Do you want to, like, watch TV, or something? Do lesbians do that?" Alex whispered the last part with a hint of mischief - that would have been absurd to anyone other than Maggie, who cocks her head to the side with a look of teasing adoration. "Let's see... we could watch 'Orange is the New Black', gays love that one."
"You're ridiculous!" Maggie's head falls back with laughter, encouraging Alex's little comedy act and making her beam with giddy pride. She brings two coasters to the coffee table and sits on the couch, moving some pillows around so Maggie can follow suit. She sits to Alex's right and Alex rests her head on Maggie's shoulder, nestling in while Maggie drapes a fleece blanket over them both. She reaches around Alex and holds her closer, feeling the rhythm of her heartbeat and breath slow at the contact. Alex tucks her knees up on the couch cushion and they forget to turn on the TV, lost in the moment and absorbing every bit of it. Street traffic and miscellaneous cacophony from below could be heard through an open window as Alex shifted her weight to look up at Maggie; she stretched to plant a soft peck on Maggie's cheek. Maggie cupped Alex's face with her free hand and kissed her gently. They pulled apart slowly, Alex keeping her eyes closed with a satisfied grin.
"Alex, will you be my girlfriend?"
"Of course," Alex replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "I thought that was a given."
Maggie's lips curved into a half-smile, and she rested her head on Alex's. Alex fell asleep on her shortly after, and Maggie - who had to work night shift - rose slowly, careful not to wake her. She lifted Alex's head with one hand and stood in one swift movement, using the other to set the pillow in her place. Alex stirred but didn't wake, wrapping an arm around the pillow and sighing lightly; Maggie was completely enamoured by this innocent display, and allowed herself to stare for a few seconds. She pushed a strand of Alex's hair behind her ear and pressed a kiss to her forehead, gently stroking her skin with her thumb. Figuring Alex might want leftovers in the morning, Maggie put the pizza box in the fridge and tidied the counter before opening the door. She took one last look, switching off the lights and shutting it behind her, making sure that the lock quietly clicked shut.
