My knife began to vibrate slightly on my table, I didn't think much of it. The vibration grew stronger and soon all my silverware, plate and glass began to move. My drink tipped and spilled as my whole table began to shake. The walls began cracking with movement, the floor felt like it could collapse leading into a cavern of obscurity.
I stood there, and time went still. All sounds were drowned out, my eyes were wide open, I didn't blink once. My eyes may have been wide open, but I was seeing nothing. I was in a trance, one that almost got me killed.
After nearly a minute my brain screamed at me and I came out of my trance, my thoughts became aware to what was happening...earthquake.
I heard the walls of my home ripping apart and with a jolt of adrenaline, I took off towards the door. I had no time to stop my sprint and I skidded hard into the door, nearly falling over. Adrenaline and fear building up inside me, I panicked and struggled at unlocking the door to safety. Sweat was dripping down my forehead. I unlocked the door and swung it open, but it was too late. My home collapsed as I tried to run out into the street and a piece of debris hit me in the back of the head, and everything went black.
I awoke coughing, dust was everywhere. I was pinned down by debris. Nothing but tiny bits of light peeking through the cracks of debris lit the area. My head began to throb, feeling like I just survived a bullet to the head. I knew by the pain that I was bleeding, and if I didn't get out I was going to die there. I put my hands firmly on the ground as if I was going for a push-up. I brought my knees up as far as I could, and with all my might I pushed up. The metal framing that was crushing my spine wouldn't give. I fell back to the concrete ground in defeat. I began to realize that this place may be my coffin. I closed my eyes. The pain from my head going away.
Darkness consumed me, but then I began to see a light, a white light. It grew bigger and brighter. Soon it was all I could see.
My mother walked up to me, smiling as she always did. Her smile would light up any room she ventured into. I stared at her, her hair was long, brown and silky. I could smell her perfume, a comforting strawberry scent. She had her favourite light pink lipstick on. She had just a light amount of makeup on but it was all she needed. She looked into my eyes, her glistening, deep dark brown eyes said everything. Everything was okay. I was safe with her, and for the first time in a long time I felt secure, but then I remembered. My mom died in a boating accident 6 years ago. She read the confusion on my face and responded calmly.
"It's okay," she said as she reached out her hand, "take my hand." She smiled gently at me.
I reached out and came within a few inches of touching her hand, but then an image appeared in my mind. An image of my wife washed over me, my beautiful wife.
She had an oval shaped face with pale skin. Her slim build looked stunning in her black and grey dress she was wearing. She had wavy light brown hair, that flowed through the air like a proud flag. She had small lips that complimented her gorgeous green eyes. Her eyelashes gently curled up and she had her eyeliner on just right. Her nose was thin, almost too small for her face. Her eyebrows were perfectly shaped. She had a dusting of freckles across her nose and cheeks. She was smiling, that smile was always my reward for making her laugh. She'd smile at me with her perfect white teeth and just seeing her smile, always made me happy. If anyone had a smile brighter than my mother's, it was her.
The image faded and my mom was standing in front of me again, and we locked eyes. Just from looking into my eyes, she understood. She knew I wasn't coming with her. A tear rolled down her cheek as she smiled with her lips. She backed up a few steps and disappeared into the whiteness. After a few moments the whiteness grew dimmer, and soon I was left in an ocean of darkness.
