This time around, Zane was nice to me and didn't try anything. My load was substantially lighter, and he wore a look of relief when he took my backpack and found that out. I laughed at him, and he gave me a reproachful look.

"You were mean yesterday. Granted, I deserved some of it, but still. Do you normally carry that much stuff?"

"Once in a great while yeah, but the majority of the time it's like this."

"Ok good. I thought it was normal, and I was going, 'How can she not have chronic back problems? She should be bent double.'"

"Hey!" I lightly smacked his arm. "Be nice. It wasn't that bad." Zane grinned.

"Yes it was, and you know it."

"Fine. It was a little excessive." I allowed. "Thanks for putting up with me." I gave a small smile. Zane chuckled.

"No problem. I don't mind. It's kind of fun, waiting to see what antics you'll get up to next." I hmphed. He was kind of right, I did get up to things. We were in our first period, and he set my stuff down while I sat down.

"Hey thanks. I really appreciate it." I told him. Shocking me, Zane actually sat down beside me.

"What are you doing? Don't you need to catch up with your friends? You better not be taking pity on me."

"Whoa, I'm not. I want to stay here, you're fun to be around. I can catch up with my friends later." I narrowed my eyes. He held up his hands. "Honest. I'm not lying. Stop glaring at me. It's making me nervous." I let it go, then cocked my head.

"You said yesterday that every boy knew my name. What did you mean by that? It's been bugging me for awhile. I'm kind of scared to know. It's not something bad is it?" Zane had an amused smile on.

"Nope. It's because you're you."

"That's very enlightening. Explain."

"Your demeanor, your personality. Your looks also factor in. From what I've heard, it's a consensus that you're really cute. They like the shyness, and the ability to not take crap from anyone. You're also willing to help anyone out. To be honest, I think you scare them, too. You had me anxious when I got the text from Tristan. I realized that you weren't that scary, just prickly, and that charm doesn't work. That's probably why the guys are afraid, they know they can't charm you. Huh. Anyways, you've probably broken plenty of hearts." My jaw was on the floor, and I was probably bright red.

"You're lying. There is no way on Earth that this is true. I'm not that special, the way you describe me. Nuh uh. Guys don't even give me a passing glance, let alone having broken hearts." I shook my head vehemently. Zane looked sad.

"It's true. You can choose to believe me or not, but it's all true. You're beautiful, Keeley, inside and out."

"Stop it. I don't want an inflated ego. You've only known me for a day, really. Don't tell me that, it sounds like you're making advances on me. Stupid brain, why did you have to go and ask that question." Zane still had that sad look on his face. I didn't like it, so I impulsively reached over and hugged him.

"Why do you have that sad look on your face? I don't like it. Turn your frown upside down." I felt his chest move in a laugh, and I pulled back. He had a ghost of a smile on his face.

"I didn't like it when you believed you weren't special enough to have guys look at you. I was also sad that I missed out on possibly something special." I burned red.

"Well, I still don't think guys look at me like that, but I'll allow that I'm good. Besides, you can be my new best friend, so you won't miss out on much." I gave a tentative smile, which Zane returned.
