Jenna's POV
"Lulu. It's time to wake up sweetie," I gently nudged my daughter in the morning. She moaned and hugged her pink and blue bear.
"Its your first day of kindergarten."
"Yay!" She yelled and hoped out of bed.
"Silly girl." I grabbed the outfit I had laid out the night before, a cute polka dot skirt, a pink shirt, and some light pink sneakers. I helped her get dressed then she grabbed my hand and skipped into the kitchen.
Our house was pretty small, which no upstairs. Just a kitchen, living room, bathroom, and two bedrooms. Owning a diner didn't get us enough money for a big fancy house.
After Lulu and I are breakfast and finished getting ready I drove her to school before I went to work.
"Hello. My name is Miss Ashley. I'm your kindergarten teacher," a nice woman with short brown hair, bangs, and glasses said when we got to the school, "let me help this little girl then I'll help you guys." She turned to a little girl with thin brown hair. "So what's your name sweetie?"
"This is Emma Pomatter," the girls mom explained.
At the word "Pomatter" I looked up at them, my eyes widening. The mom looked at me and I awkwardly looked away. I hadn't seen or heard anything about Jim and his wife, Francine, in five years, so I was surprised.
"So who is this?" I didn't hear because I was still thinking about the Pomatters.
"Mama." Lulu tugged at my dress.
"Oh I'm sorry," I shook out of my thoughts, "This is Lulu Colman."
After Lulu was born and I divorced my husband, Earl, I went back to my maiden name, Colman, and I didn't want Lulu to have any record of Earl so we legally changed her last name to Colman instead of Hunterson.
"Okay. Lulu have fun today. I'll be back to pick you up later. I love you sweetie." I hugged my little daughter tightly and gave her a kiss.
"I love you too Mama."
I headed to my car and went to the diner. I kept thinking about how strange it was that I had seen Francine.
"Becky. Dawn. Come back to the kitchen for a minute. I gotta tell you something," I called to my two friends. They had been friends with me before I was pregnant with Lulu.
Dawn is quirky. And a little OCD. She is married to a man named Ogie, who's also a good friend of mine. They have similar interests like taking part in historical reenactments. They have one year old twins, Brian and Brenda.
Becky is more rebellious and wild. She doesn't care about most stuff and won't take crap of any kind from anyone. She does her thing and doesn't care if people disagree.
"Jenna. What is is?" Dawn asked worriedly.
"It's not anything bad I promise," I said.
"Well that's a relief," Becky recalled.
"When I was dropping Lulu off today at school I ran into Francine. Dr. Pomatter's wife."
"You mean like the Dr. Pomatter you had the affair with?!" Becky raised her eyebrows at me.
"Yep. That's the one."
"Oh my goodness!" Dawn exclaimed, "What are you going to do? Aren't you going to have to see him? Well of course you will. You'll see him at the school and wow!"
"Yeah. Wow," I breathed.
"What are you going to do?" said Becky, "cause I mean you guys have got a history."
"Yeah. I don't know though..." I said.
"You ain't gettin' paid to sit around all day!" Cal, the manager and cook (minus pies), yelled.
"Well Jenna is right here. And for you information Cal, Jenna owns this place and she's payin' you. So you'd better get to work." Becky spat back. I laughed and shook my head.
"Well we'd probably actually get back to work now." I said.
"Yes!" Dawn squeaked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At 3:15 I left to go pick up Lulu at school. When I got there the door was closed and parents were waiting by the door. I didn't look at where I was going and bumped into someone. The person dropped their keys and I went down to grab them.
"Oh thank you," the man said. His voice sounded familiar. I stood up and handed him his keys. I looked at his face and realized that it was Dr. Pomatter.
I let out a short breath. "Jenna..." he said.
"Dr. Pomatter," I said.
"Please call me Jim."
"Okay. Jim."
"I haven't seen you in like... 5 years?"
"Yeah."
"Could we have coffee sometime?" then he added quickly, "just friends."
"Um yes of course"
"Is Lulu in this class?"
"Yeah. She is. I saw your wife this morning and Emma."
"Yeah. I never said anything about her because it would have complicated everything."
"Yeah. She sure is a cute little girl."
"Thanks."
ring!!! The bell rang and a ton of cute little kindergarteners ran out to find their parents.
"Mama!" Lulu exclaimed.
"Hi baby." I scooped her up and gave her a hug.
"Hi Daddy!" Emma yelled and gave Dr. Pomatter a hug.
"Hi sweetie."
"Well how about coffee tomorrow?" I asked.
"Okay. Say 12:30?"
"Awesome. See you then."
