PROLOGUE

There are a lot of things that we understand and a lot of things that will now and forever baffle us. A high school relationship? Most of us can predict what those are usually based off of. They want to experience "love" and being with someone. They want to be the one that everyone is whispering about. They just want attention. Most high school relationships end very quickly anyways. Yeah, we all can say something along the lines of that. But what about the context?

Ah.

Not a lot of us can say that we know exactly what is on the minds of these teens. We can't look at a couple walking down the hallway and know what they're thinking about saying or doing. We can't tell what they're afraid of. We can't depict what they've talked about, what they've done, what they've said. We can't say, "Look at the way she's looking at him. She's thinking about if he's going to hurt her like her previous boyfriend. She's thinking about if he's going to leave her like her father did when she was younger." Highly unlikely, yes? But what if we could? What would that change? How would our view on high school relationships shift? There are many of us who have been in great relationships that started in 9th-12th grade. Most of us are married to our high school sweethearts.

But there are few of us who still believe in the magic of young love. There are few of us who know we're hopless romantics. There are few of us who truly understand the beauty of love and are amazed with its' blooming...

CHAPTER ONE

“IREALLY can’t believe it,”

Sam looked at Josie and stifled a smile. Josie had emerald green eyes and fair skin.

Her pitch black hair was pulled back into a braided bun and her rose red lips babbled about how the captain of the football team stood up Erica Paisley, the most popular girl in school, for Jenna Randall. “And she wears Crocs! Crocs with matching suspenders, Sam.”

“What’s so bad about being different,” Sam picked at her mystery meat and shrugged, “I mean, look at you, Jo.” Josie smoothed out her gray blazer and straightened out her vintage elephant patterned tie. “But I make it work. Who else can pull this off?” Sam rolled her big brown eyes playfully and looked around the cafeteria.

It was hard to believe that she was a senior in high school. Everyone that she’d spent the last 3 years with grew up so much; Janine Sanders used to be the nerd of the school. She never washed her face, she was 3”9’, she had zits and scars everywhere and her hair was “I-just-got-shocked” frizzy. Her clothes were 2 sizes too big for her, and not in a cute way. Now she hung with the cheerleaders and the jocks, sporting Jack Wills, her once wild hair is now tamed with Paul Mitchell and she was a towering 5”8’. Sam was still 5”5’, the same height she’d been since sophomore year. Josie claimed that it made Sam even cuter since she was “bite-sized”, but Sam hated looking up at everyone she talked to. She locked eyes with Macaulus Shepard and her breath caught in her throat. He nodded his head at her and she groaned when he waved that two-finger wave that he always did. She took in his perfectly lined white teeth, his feathery light brown hair and his chiseled jaw line. his body was toned, not freakishly ripped like his best friend, Peter Statham. He was sweet and sensitive.

Nothing like her boyfriend.

Sam waved back like she wasn’t completely freaking out on the inside and turned to face Josie. She chugged her carton juice box and took out her iPhone, “So where’s your superstar boyfriend?” Sam shoved a fry in her mouth to avoid saying something stupid, and shrugged. Josie scoffed and took a selfie poking out her lips in a duck-face pose.

“Oh, please, Sam.”

“What?”

“What was that?” Sam stopped chewing.
